Re: Resurfacing Aluminum Boat.

That's a good deal on the drum sander. I was wondering if there is any kind of scotchbrite pad for a handheld belt sander that might work to leave the right looking grain as one of these drum sanders.

Re: Implications of pitting repair and future prevention

Kevin that's a pretty dang significant geezer project alright! Looking forward to seeing it splashed and running. What is its intended use? Hope you open up a thread here on it. Yeah, lots of time it's easier to just grab the saw and cut rather than going through the cad design process. Where it rea...

Re: Implications of pitting repair and future prevention

I do believe we corresponded a time or 2, probably on THT? Had a lot of folks following the construction process, for better or worse. Looking back I would have done some things differently....I had been convinced that continuous weld beads needed to be a few inches long, max, which we did but too m...

But of course. Dredged from the garbage can that is my photo organization on computer, here's a few shots. That's my brother reacting to the first Wahoo he's ever seen. My son is on gaff, he's been fishing in Alaska, charter and trolling for 15 years now. The young guy with a coffee cup is me on fir...

Re: Implications of pitting repair and future prevention

Okay, I'm officially heaving a large sigh of relief. Yes, all repairs will be coin sized at most, no large areas of aggressive corrosion. I'm also going to revisit the wiring scheme and most likely relocate it, going to go into plastic conduit rigid and flex with sealtite terminations as much as pos...

Implications of pitting repair and future prevention

Ok, so a 8.5 meter powercat I built with a partner was stored improperly by now ex partner, and I'm needing to do some repairs. It has some pitting on the 5MM bottom plates, that appear to be associated with some bilge pumps located in same area. It was left holding fresh water on the trailer, bilge...

Re: Oil as corrosion prevention in bilge?

Well, everybody has their own secret sauce, and as Kevin says, the ACF50 is well proven in aircraft use. That said, I'm sticking with the LPS 3 as it is durable....it forms a waxy, greasy, self healing coating that firms up and does not evaporate, and I've used it on electrical items that are expose...

Looking for go fast deep v center console design.

Since my alloy cat is moving to the PacNW I find myself in need of a replacement boat for offshore fishing out of Port Aransas Tx. Our conditions are rough here, short, steep chop, none of those Pacific rollers unfortunately.Typical run is 40-60 miles into head seas. So, I'm looking for a design for...

Re: Oil as corrosion prevention in bilge?

A bit of follow up here. I'm happy to say the corrosion pits were localized and relatively easy to grind out and tig up. None were deep enough to require plate replacement. We're going to move ahead with the refit and relocate the boat to our place on the olympic pen. It doesn't yet, but will have, ...

Re: Robotics not all that far away!

Well, these automated processes are pretty specific as to which task they can best perform. Fitup and tacking could well be done as well, using the proper fixtures to hold the parts. But since the real task here is to automate the welding tasks it looks pretty doable from here. Now, what I'm going t...

That's a tough looking cat. I'd be interested to know how much fuel you carry and where the tanks are located in the hulls.

Re: Robotics not all that far away!

I know this is an old thread but of great interest to me. I had a boat designed, cnc cut, and was astounded at the accuracy of the parts. Talking 20 foot hull plates shaped like a banana, pushed into position along the hull and 1 mm max of error. Granted this was from a fairly renowned Kiwi designer...

Oil as corrosion prevention in bilge?

I've got my 28' powercat on the bench for some refreshing. Due to a failed partnership, the boat sat at ex partner's place for a couple years, batteries on, freshwater collecting along with leaves, fishhooks and bilge pumps leaking current. So, some corrosion on inside of 6mm hull plating though onl...

Re: Marine Glass????

That Makralon sounds good. I have thought about those tempered glass windows in rubber gaskets, having one pop out would be not good at all. If I stay with them I'm going to come up with some sort of clamping arrangement on the inside. So, is this abrasion resistant plastic tough enough to withstand...

Re: Marine Glass????

I chose to use tempered glass for pilothouse. I made patterns in masonite of the glass, went to local glass company and they had the glass cut and tempered. It was surprisingly inexpensive. Your glass supplier has access for rubber extrusions in every imaginable configuration for installation. These...

Re: Foam OR No Foam?

I wrestled with the foam issue and spent a fair amount on the USCG site using their calculators and recommendations. As far as the sealed watertight compartments, unless something has changed in the last few years with the regs, the CG gives them zero value for flotation. As a matter of fact if you'...

Yep, those Powermigs are outstanding once you've got em set. You might do your friend a big favor and once you get her dialed in for a particular thickness and position and Write The Settings Down In A Notebook. The frustrating thing is trying to exploit all those other capabilities. A fellow sent m...

Re: Longitudinal Twist...

Some impressive framing shown in these pictures. I have to think that these massive frames are primarily to resist bottom and side loads. Your biggest counteracting member for long twist will be your welded floor. That, well attached to your properly spaced framing, turns the boat into a box beam......

Re: So I want to build

I was in your shoes once myself. I bought a set of plans from a good designer and had my parts plasma cut. Recognized my weakness in welding (had never, even once, welded alum) so bought a Powermig with Python gun. Did just what was suggested, had a ton of offcut/scrap and practiced on that. The boa...
