Re: Line-X for boat hull?

I completely removed the rubberized spary in bedliner from my 2006 Aluminum Chambered Boats 26' center console. It had bubbled up in many places and had water in the bubbles. This also caused corrosion and most of it came up in big pieces. There was also pitting under it so I don't recommend spray o...

Re: Anyone ever built a hull bottom to change the shape of an existing hull?

The boat is still in the shop getting repaired, I haven't talked to the welder about price to change the hull shape yet, but his price for rewelding the chines and armoring them, fixing a few lifting streaks that rocks have crushed, and strengthening the bow door and stuff is super reasonable. He li...

Re: Anyone ever built a hull bottom to change the shape of an existing hull?

I took the boat in to the local shop. We talked over bunch of things. I hope to have it back in a week... say maybe Wednesday Dec 2nd. I brought up the idea of changing the hull shape to increase the dead rise and vee. He seemed to think it is totally doable, and he will think about price. Per Kevin...

Re: Anyone ever built a hull bottom to change the shape of an existing hull?

All good stuff to hear, thanks Kevin! There are no tanks to move, the current fuel tanks are "portable" 24 and 12 gallon above the deck tanks. I wasn't thinking of full on Armstrong brackets either. They make 8" and 6" setback motor brackets. But cutting down the existing transom...

Anyone ever built a hull bottom to change the shape of an existing hull?

So I have a 1998 22' Harbercraft landing craft. The hull has had a hard life here in Alaska, but it has served its purpose. It has new power (150 Mercury fourstroke with about 160 hours), and a custom Bill Munson boats 3 window cab console. The hull as designed (and marketed) was that it is a 12 deg...

Re: 2003 Coldwater Boat History

Patrick,

Coldwater boats built Bristol Bay gillnetters under All Points Marine. So yes these are the most robust of boats. I have a good friend here in Southeast that stole a 28' Coldwater for $85k two years ago. Talk about aluminum plate!!! Good score for you too!

Work boat and paint over a soildly bonded existing but worn paint surface

I have a 1998 painted aluminum landingcraft from Harbercraft boats. It has a ton of dents and paint scratches on it. I have been in the process of trying to sand and remove the paint, but it was originally painted with a great multi step process resulting in a durable finish. But my boat now has lot...

Re: General opinion of Hewescraft Ocean Pro?

You are in luck! I used to own a Hewescraft OceanPro, powered with a Yamaha F150. I also put a set of Doel Fin hydrofoils on the boat. It allowed the boat to maintain a planing speed of 12 or 12 knots. So in the really sloppy stuff I just slowed down to semi-displacement speed, and the boat performe...

Re: Chine and transom cracking

Well my phone camera lens is cracked. I have begun stripping the paint and I can see that the interior welds are still holding the boat together. I'll try to see if I can get a good shot and I'll post it. It could be that the boat was built and the exterior welds were ground down and body filler was...

Chine and transom cracking

I have a 22' Harbercraft landing craft that has had seen some very hard use. It is a fully painted hull and I think it is a 1996 vintage. Close inspection has revealed that the chines and transom outside edges have hairline cracks along the joints of the hull. This came to my attention from pulling ...

Re: New guy from Alaska...introduction along with a question of course

You can't go wrong with buying a set of aluminum skiff plans with cutting files and having a shop cut out the aluminum. My friend has done this a few times and it is really the way to go. His next one he will have the boat trailer delivered to the cutout shop and they will load all the cut aluminum ...

Re: 33'x14' Midjet with pitting?

Here is the boat. Looking at the spare out drives I gather they must be toast.

It is a cool boat, but the pitting is fairly extensive :(

33'x14' Midjet with pitting?

So I am looking at this large Midjet Pilothouse with twin KAD42s and 290Duoprop drives. I have found some extensive pitting along the chine up to the waterline. It was a harbor vessel. It is a 1993ish vintage boat. But the plating has got to be 1/2" bottom and 3/16" sides. So is pitting th...

I'd really like to hear how she is at rest while fishing. Tippy? yes/no? I have seen them advertised for a while. I hope to find pictures of a hard top model soon also. I am in the market for my next boat. When you can give us a more in-depth review of your new boat. She is awesome.

Kevin, The aluminum panga has already been built and is is for sale in Haines, AK even. http://juneau.craigslist.org/boa/4605458432.html I know because I knew the original owner who had it built. I can't remember which, but it was built in either Petersburg or Wrangell (maybe it is a Svendsen). At a...

Re: SODA BLAST / SAND BLAST BOTTOM ....

I did exactly what you are suggesting. I got a wet blast attachment and used it with my 3500 psi pressure washer. You do need to buy a lot of what ever type of blast media you are going to use. It does put on a great "toothed surface" to repaint though. I haven't used soda but the fact tha...

workskiff.com I have seen some of those boats built as you described. For the $ though you would be best to buy something like a Crestliner or Lund and have a local shop fab you you something.

Re: 3 AK tough work/commuter skiffs

Chaps,

And some UMHW on the bow to keep from gripping the rocks. Beaching on a falling tide with up to 25' of change in 6 hours sucks at times. But we do it a lot. I have found that around here a Porta bracket isn't necessary, of course I haven't tried one.

Re: 3 AK tough work/commuter skiffs

Welder, I do not mean landingcraft because I tend to think of these as having a more flat bow and being wide enough for moving equipment/supplies through. As mentioned I already have one of these. Voyageur, I am looking for something more spartan than those models. I don't think I will try to make i...

3 AK tough work/commuter skiffs

I am contemplating a new boat for my fleet. I am looking at a Southeast Alaska do it all work/play platform. I have a remote cabin without a dock. I am looking at three commercial fisheries I can fit in around a normal work schedule (good for my sanity, teaching my children about work, possible tax ...
