Re: stringers

Kmorin... the analogy of the 1/8" tank against the larger stringer is all you had to say.. I've built a lot of tanks off the measurements of old corroded tanks.. So it's not going to be an immediate concern.. again lesson learned.. I've kept the transom off for now for ease of movement on and o...

Re: stringers

Kmorin... Thank you for the explanation of the box tube... I thoroughly understand what your talking about.. Does OH CRAP... mean anything ... Well this is an oh crap moment as I'm almost finished welding the box tubing stringers in place... looking to install frames.. which will not be easy due to ...

Re: stringers

Pelagic... thank you for the pictures... i'm almost done fitting stringers as i went to box tube.. 2 10 X 2" off the CL... and 4 2" X 3" evenly spaced on either side.. Oh and i installed them 90 degrees to the bottom plate... Haven't figured out the frame situation yet but it's going ...

Re: Flip this beast... need help..!!

Chaps.... The I-beam runs down the center of the 12 ft wide door.. over the boat fore and aft.. right down the center line. The boat can easily be flipped in it's own space... if I could make some adaptation on the bow and stern, lift it with the chain falls on the center line. I could spin it up-si...

Flip this beast... need help..!!

Not too long from now.. I'll be finishing up stringers and installing bulkheads and frames... I need to start thinking on how to flip this boat over and work on the bottom... It's the how to part I'm looking to focus on... I currently have an I-beam overhead with 2 chain falls capacity of 2 and one ...

Re: Longitudinal Twist...

Peterbo3, Welderbob and Kmorin.. Thank you for the answers to my question of Twist... and all of the advise is sound This shows me what it's going to take to ultimately strengthen stringers and floor into a single unit of framework to make this boat as strong as I can... This is where a little overb...

Longitudinal Twist...

Is there any one factor more than another that helps prevent longitudinal twisting bow to stern torque. My boat turns out to be 27ft. LOA and 10ft. X 4in. Beam.. I'm just worried about twisting the boat.. repeatedly. Over time there will be welds that pop... just trying to think about that ahead of ...

Re: Sharpie for layout..

GandRfab.... Yes it helps immensely. I usually buy a pack or two... and put them in the fridge. Use them as you need them PRN.... and they would last till I eventually smash the tips on them... by that time they are just about gone anyway... Lately... they seem to run out faster than ever... I'm not...

Sharpie for layout..

Has anyone else noticed.... When laying out parts such as bulkheads stringers and frames... a Sharpie doesn't last as long as it use to... Fine point sharpies for small parts and the big boys for lay out of stringers and other required lines I buy them in 4 packs and keep them in the fridge so they ...

Re: MOTOR SIZE

I've always been under the impression if looking to power a boat the rule of thumb is Length X Width = Horsepower Seems to have held true for me all these years... You can vary the size of the motor given the weight of the gear your going to carry... The boat i'm building now is 27ft X 11ft... = 297...

The continuity of the rear handrail on the rear leg.. i don't want a handrail more than 2 fingers hold on the inside of the handhold and parallel. if i went to the upper 1inch pipe it would look awkward the handrail having more than 2 or 3 inches away from the leg its...

Chris.. thanks for your inn site. The stringer centers a 7"OC. and frames @ 24"OC. is likely the way to go.. At this point I'm re cutting the shear as i changed my mind. As what the hell was I thinking . Looking for more of the backwater look. You can get a look at the work I do at my webs...
