Re: gas or diesel?
To really figure out what you want to power your boat with you need to look at fuel cost, fuel economy, maintenance costs and installed cost. The challenge is finding boats that have been configured closely enough to get useful fuel economy numbers to give an apples to apples comparison. For instanc...

My daughter got mad at me the one time I started dip netting before she woke up and had cleaned some salmon as that was he job! My daughter gets board if she's not catching, but it seems more often than not the girls end up with the "hot" rod. Need to find the pics from this summers trip.

Re: Corrosion under flooring on Alumaweld Intruder?
I'm pretty darn sure using a brass brush on aluminum that will see marine service is a huge no no! You'd basically be putting on a microscopic coating of brass and creating a nice setup for galvonic corrosion. I'd say scotchbrite bristle discs would be the ticket. http://images.jamestowndistributors...

I used to think fishing was fun, then I took the kids fishing. Well, when they were really little it wasn't so fun, I just untangled their lines. But once they got a little bigger, lots of fun! http://www.fishyfish.com/paulhail/img/quillback.JPG http://www.fishyfish.com/paulhail/img/yelloweye.JPG

Re: New member - looking to buy a 24' plate boat
I am thinking about a jet because we pull the boats right up on shore sometimes to blend into the shoreline. Not set on that yet as everyone around here just uses outboards and gets out of the boat once you are in 2-3 feet of water. I would be interested in used if the price was right, but I haven'...

I'm not an naval engineer but understand a bit about what goes into an engineers mind when considering a material. You need to consider not only the physical properties of the material, but also the working properties of the material and the processes you'll use to form the material into a hull. Als...

I'll have to check out one of the Seeker Hercules, I've landed some nice fish on my blue lightnings and they make a nice rod. B&J's is walking distance to my office, so that can get expensive  On the other hand, if I walk there during lunch I limit how much damage I can do, er ah carry...

What I need to do is have my wife crawl through Patience with the Espar cranking so she'll have an appreciation of the advantage of a larger more nicely appointed boat. I definately want to spend some time with a tape measure and camera climbing through, over and around various alloy boats this summ...

Re: Another AK boater
One limitation is I need to be able to pull the boat with a 3/4 ton diesel, I don't want to upgrade to a freightliner! Unfortunatley for all intents and purposes getting a slip in Whitier is a no-go otherwise I'd be looking at a 36-40' boat. On the flip side, living on a trailer allows me to hit dif...

Another AK boater
I suppose I should have introduced myself instead of just jumping into the threads. You can blame spoiled one for me finding this forum  Slight background, I got into boating in AK by showing up at home one day with a trailer full of marine plywood and 15 gallons of expoxy. To my wife's sh...

Any rod builders?
I know the last thing I need is another project, but I'm debating building a jigging rod this winter. I have a pair of seeker blue lighting inshore rods and a pair of shimano trevala 58's and am leaning towards the parabolic style of rod. The problem is there are so many blanks out there it is hard ...

Re: Twin Yamaha 150's powerful enough?
Burn at cruise should be a touch over ~6.5 gph per 150, 13gph combined. Double that for WOT. The proper way to size power for twins IMHO is to take gross weight hull, engines, fuel, gear, passengers et al in pounds and devide by 20 for total power. Conversley a pair of 150's is suitable for a gross ...

Re: Essential Tackle For Alaska
The spot I took that ling was maybe 40 miles from port, but a few hundred yards from shore. The shallowest point of the ridge is 50' but it drops down to 2000' I've taken lings anywhere from 50' to 450' but prefer fishing in under 200' when possible. It just comes down to structure and current. Just...

Pete, Thanks for the welcome, this seems like a great forum, especially as it seems to be devoid of a paticular homeroid :nutkick: I feel like I'm at the drinking through the firehose stage looking at all the features that people are incorporating on their boats. We got really spoiled 4 years ago during 4th of July weekend. We were there for 4 days, every day was blue bird skies with temps in the 80's. Re: The Long Road Home
Nice boat! As far as hp, the best advice is figure out what your typical gross weight will be in pounds, i.e. hull, engine, fuel, passengers, gear et all then devide by 25 and that will be the ideal power for the hull. Also figure out how fast you want to go. I don't think a 90 would be anywhere nea...

Re: Do I really need x4 wheel drive?
It's alot easier to pop it into 4L than chain up, especially if you find yourself on the ramp needing more traction and a line of boats waiting to launch or retrieve.
I've got a 2500 ram 4X4 w/ the 5.9 cummins. More than enough truck for my current boat and enough truck for my future boat.

It's a toss up between the GA and the Specmar but I don't want to go through fairing/sanding, fairing/sanding, fairing/sanding, priming/sanding and painting on another boat :skillet: When we have a wet summer you might have one or two weather windows to paint outside and that is incredibly frustrati...

How near to Anchorage and what species? My tackle starts at 1/4 oz spoons and goes up to 24 oz leadheads. These are a few of my favorites for bottom fishing, and the lighter jigs are great for salmon. http://forums.accuratereloading.com/evefiles/photo_albums/3/4/4/344100033/4841088231_9C0059F23508B0...
