Re: Heavier Gauge Trailer Wiring
tin cup, Bucket, Wantry, aluminum trailers; exactly like aluminum boats shouldn't have 'grounds' or DC return circuits involved with the frame. Whenever the trailer is immersed the DC Neg leg being 'hot' relative to actual Earth Ground, will degrade the contact points, the trailer itself and corrode...

Brendan looking forward to another pretty boat post. Anything you can share (here) about the build, construction progress, assembly is very well read and appreciated by the Forum's members and readers. This part of the post requires no reply, and is just to encourage you to consider asking the desig...

littlefengers, glad to hear your knife didn't just push through corrosion spots! Might try to find some way to leave the boat up on a set of blocks to be able to find any leaks if you flood her bilges? I hope you're not being literal when you say "fill it with water"? Might not help any wi...

Re: First boat...need recommendations before taking out on water.
littlefengers, Welcome to the AAB.com Forum, my caution is about the carpet covered trailer bunks - not the visible spots of corrosion between the external keel piece flange and the hull. If there were conditions leading to corrosion over five years- I'd want to look at the hull that was in contact ...

Patriot, could you, in the interest of full disclosure and educating the Forum about the auction and benefit... please review the entire show; from stem to stern? Lots I don't understand? but then I'm not used to most of these fundraiser type events. So in the interest of everyone have a clear view ...

one3, first skiff has half pipe rub rails at the sheer but the second shows only a guard deck/gunwale plate/sheer clamp to topsides- weld joint? Customer specified detail? The half pipe will help some what to reduce spray in a taller chop. Not for helmsman! he'll/she'll be wet regardless if the bree...

Re: One3 new skiff 17'x6'6''
1-3, great looking skiff! Neat double sides? are those air voids? makes a nice look of the little coaming continuing down close to the deck- goes with the seats/lockers/tank compartments. Did you acid etch the skiff? Looks nice and clean of mill scale! Think she'll be a tad wet without external spra...

Re: Bilge cleaning Tips?????
fatcow, does the bilge wash have to be pumped out of the 2nd hatch or does the hull have a drain fitting at the stern? The difference being the former will be a pain to fully drain and dry up and the latter would allow you to just put the garden hose in the forward hatch and let it run for a few day...

Andrew, welcome to the AAB.com Forum glad you posted your question. Re: Bilge cleaning Tips?????
FC, is the bilge open where you can get to it and see what's happening as you clean? For example, can to take off any decking and use a pressure washer? and see to clean the entire bilge? OR is this a boat where you have to leave the deck on and rely on whatever solution was poured into one end to c...

Re: rub rail corrosion/pitting
Dingo44, Yes, it appears that it is caused by salt being trapped along the edges of the rail. I'd agree that may be what appears the cause or your pitting ; but not actually the real cause shown of the pitting in your photos. I think you may be seeing a white chalky, powdery substance and labeling th...

Re: rub rail corrosion/pitting
Dingo, not knowing better it appears Pacific has installed a flat bar to bolt to above their topsides and then only welded the extruded/shaped gunwale round inside to allow for a nice tight outside fit of the top toe of the rubber to the underside of their rounded oblong extrusion? I agree that I do...

Re: rub rail corrosion/pitting
Dingo44, Welcome to the AAB.com Forum and sorry to hear of your new boat's corrosion. I'm not that familiar with Pacifics in detail and most of them I've seen have an aluminum extrusion at the gunwale as rub rail. When you describe your boat you're referring to a rubber or vinyl shape that was insta...

Re: HELP, Vintage Boat Hull found but unknown maker
Jeff, there's a possibility the boat is a "FeatherCraft"? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/763923155513613578/ I found some images that lead to "feathercraft.net" and that site seemed to have lots of thumbnails of similar boats- boats that had similar design elements, and were rivet...

Re: HELP, Vintage Boat Hull found but unknown maker
Jeff, welcome to the AAB.com Forum, not that many posting members have vintage riveted boats but hopefully someone will recognize the hull or one like it? Very distinctive fins! Not sure, of course, but it would appear to be the product of the GM or Chrysler automotive designers from the late 50' ma...

Re: Hull corrosion, Lifetimer. Advice sought.
Chaps, you just haven't been involved with a welding service with sufficient skill, equipment and interest to repair pits in hull plating! The best you can do is to return metal plates to metal plates... eliminate the cause, reduce the influences that caused the conditions and return to the original...

Re: Hull corrosion, Lifetimer. Advice sought.
laxputs, the premium repair would be to TIG weld the corrosion sites after they are excavated to clean metal using a high speed carbide burr and then followed by sanding off the weld. This is the best because you end up with an intact all metal hull. Not the easiest repair in the world - agreed. And...

Re: Hull corrosion, Lifetimer. Advice sought.
Laxputs, welcome to the AAB.com Forum. Have you approached the builder and asked for help addressing the pitting? Is the pitting outside the hull- seems like it from your post? Do you know what type of bottom paint was used-is left on the hull? (might be wrong type?) Is the hull on a trailer with bu...

Re: Flushing The Bilge
AT2, curious how the bilge got contaminated with a sealed deck? Poor hatch seal? That mixture can become acidic pretty quick and that can pit the plate as a result. Not sure how you'll rinse a bilge with foam filling - that you keep dry (!) all done through a single 6" opening? And even more cu...

Re: Flushing The Bilge
AT2, depends on what's in the bilge to be washed? If there is any oil(?) then solvents (Stoddard) help, if it's organics like leaf mold or pollen and pine needles (?) then a strong soap solution will help. Whatever you do: pls avoid a very good industrial cleaner (for many applications) Simple Green...

Re: New guy here with corrosion.
Ryan, yessiree! that boat had some thick organic compost for bilge water!! That stuff can really get after aluminum. The two stringer boxes do show lots of local corrosion where the pedestal cross pc was located. This is classic crevice corrosion (poultice corrosion) where water is left to become ac...
