Re: Chasing corrosion around fittings

Thank you for the insight. In unpainted areas of the boat (bilges, etc) it is clear to me that the mill scale was not removed. At the time of build, I was told that the entire boat (at least the area to be painted) was sanded and etched. An epoxy primer was used, followed by a BASF Diamont paint. In...

Chasing corrosion around fittings

I have a 28' boat from a well-known builder in Oregon which I had built in 2017. Unfortunately, I chose to have it mostly painted. At the time of building, I asked about protecting stainless fittings with something like Tef-gel, but was told that their method was to use silicone on each fastener. Of...

Sorry that no one has replied to your post...
Congrats on the boat and good luck with the modifications.
I'm an east coast welded boat owner, so don't see all too many others around me.
Keep us posted on the boat updates.

Re: Bottom Paint - Looking for Advice

I've been unhappy with Trilux33 over the past few years on my alloy boat here in MA. I still get barnacles and quite a bit of "lettuce" on the boat. I spoke with the Sea Hawk rep and was told that Colorkote was ok to put over Trilux, so that's what I did recently. The boat just went in the...

Re: Transducer inside hull

Great info. That midships transducer location did not work out so well.

I have to go back and try to get the transom transducer into better water flow.

Re: Transducer inside hull

Thanks for the info. I don't plan on worrying about the angle of the hull as I understand most transducers transmit a fairly wide beam. I guess that would effect the side-scanning features though, making the image lopsided. But, I don't really care. As you said, this is "bottom-only" usage...

Transducer inside hull

The transom-mount transducer on my 2018 North River RAIV loses bottom at any speed except slow ahead. I've lowered the transducer as far as it will go to try to reach clean water flow, without success. I've had a cheap transom-mount depth transducer siliconed INSIDE the hull of one of my fiber glass...

Re: Lubricant for rubber deck gaskets

I have one of those hatches on my North River RAIV. The gasket is clearish/opaque and feels like silicone to me but I guess it could be rubber. Couldn't it simply be lubricated with a little silicone grease?

Re: Corrosion on anode

Now THAT's interesting. I had thought some about how clean to make the interface from the anode to the tab on the transom. But now that you illustrate the issue better, I feel that I may need to put some extra effort into making sure that interface is as low-resistance (electrically) as possible.

Re: Corrosion on anode

Good question. I had to go back and check.

The anode in my photos is a 6x12 hull anode (A-24779 alloy?) which I purchased from BoatZincs.com and cut in half.

Re: Corrosion on anode

Thanks for commenting. The anode is aluminum (1/2" 6x12 plate I cut in half and drilled for mounting), and I think it's working wonderfully. Yes, it's protecting the whole boat, as I think intended by North River Boats. I replace the anode twice a year and it seems to be moderately active. The ...

I know my anodes are supposed to be sacrificial and all but, I haven't seen them look like this before.

Is this just funny looking corrosion or something else?

Re: Heading sensor on alloy boat

Just because I haven't seen the addressed. Are you calibrating the compass on the water underway? Yes, underway calibration. I tried the calibration procedure again yesterday with no better results. At this point it's just an exercise in futility since the autopilot is working reasonably well even ...

Re: Heading sensor on alloy boat

Here's the installation below the floor of the helm area, looking aft. I guess I have to admit that the course computer being only a few inches away from the bilge pump wires is probably not good.

Re: Heading sensor on alloy boat

Is it consistent or all over the place? I’m not sure, I’ll have to experiment some more. It’s primarily the Garmin autopilot Calibration Value in the Dealer Setup menu which concerns me. It’s gives a number from 0 to 100, with 100 being a magnetically perfect environment. Mine is somewhere around t...

Heading sensor on alloy boat

I have a Garmin GHP Reactor autopilot on my North River RAIV with the course computer (heading sensor) mounted below the deck, under the helm area. It works but I’m not able to get very good compass calibration values. Am I fighting a losing battle with a metal boat or should I be looking for other ...

Kevin,

Any chance you could draw a simple diagram of what you're referring? I'm trying to picture the joint you're describing.

Also, I sent you a private message on this site. Did you receive it?

Many thanks from a new metal boat owner.

I spent some time drooling over the RockSalt that was for sale here in MA when it was at South Shore Dry Dock. Impressive boats!

I wish you the best in bringing plate boats to a wider audience here in the Northeast.

Will you be at the New England Boat Show?

Yes, I am. South Shore of Boston.

The build of this boat was super stressful trying to attend to every detail. But NRB was great to work with and I'm very pleased with the results. Next step for me is arranging bottom paint.

Finally have my own aluminum boat

I've been thinking, and dreaming, about aluminum boats for a long time and, I've perused this forum for a long time, learning and gathering information from this vast knowledge base. I thank you all for helping me get to the point of having a plate aluminum boat. I recently took delivery of this 28'...
