Re: Pacific boat sides.

That pitting is a bit unusual but won't hurt the utility of the boat. Is there a black rubber guard (D rubber) around the gunwale?

Re: Etched hull

Oxidation is what aluminum just does, getting it to look uniform everywhere is a valiant goal that you may (like most of us) eventually decide is not worth the effort. In time the boat will achieve a ruddy grayish patina overall (see my avatar photo) that is easy to live with and will require no ...

Re: Squished Gregor - Last Rites?

Last rites it is, IMO. Take the scrap value payoff and donate it to a charity for closure then go buy another straight hull and carry on. By the time you expend the effort to make that one serviceable you'll start hating it and that's not a good way to remember it. Besides it will be so ugly you'll ...

Re: Mill Scale

It's really more of a cosmetic issue, a fairly common situation. Your window openings aren't going to get eaten out. On the other hand, the way to make it stop would be to have the gaskets replaced with some made of white rubber or replace the windows with framed windows like those from Diamond Sea ...

Re: Mill Scale

That corrosion around the windows is from the carbon black leaching out of the rubber window gaskets. Carbon black is electrically conductive and electrochemically very noble. The corrosion occurs as a result of the high nobility carbon in the rubber being in direct contact with the low nobility ...

No harm done, just the nature of bare aluminum that didn't have the mill scale removed. I'll bottom paint it for you! (click on the link below my pic)

Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting

Trilux contains copper thiocyanate, a galvanically less aggressive form of copper, its the same biocide as used in Vivid. Both can be safely used on aluminum boats with a decent coat or two of epoxy primer to isolate it from the hull. Is your boat done with Primocon under Trilux? That's not a great ...

Re: Strange discoloration on aluminium hull

You don't say where you are so is this boat used in salt or freshwater? I have seen that type of staining associated with the use of magnesium anodes on bare boats used in salt, brackish or dirty fresh water with the location of the staining typically showing on hull metal locations that are in ...

Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting

As I mentioned previously and also based particularly on your new photos I think the primary issue is that the bottom job was poorly executed, most likely the shop waited too long after the final coat of epoxy primer was put on to then apply the first coat of bottom paint. Bottom paint needs to ...

Re: What Type Of Corrosion?

And my contribution to Kevin's knowledgeable response is to restate that manufacturers of riveted boats do not use marine grade alloys in boat construction and as such they are highly susceptible to various corrosion issues. Riveted boats have a short life expectancy when used extensively in salt ...

Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting

There is an all aluminum trim tab that uses a poly hinge that we see on many new builds here in WA made by Lectrotab http://www.lectrotab.com/products/aluminum-alloy-trim-tabs.php which won't affect alloy hulls though they should be equipped with R3 aluminum anodes (not zinc as they state in their ...

Re: CORROSION!!! And lots of it.

Hire a pro to do the job, I agree with Les that it can be done but it can be tricky as the corrosion can affect the hull metal in ways that only an experienced welder will know how to handle. I've watched 1/8" holes quickly get blown out to bottle cap size by a mobile dude who quickly packed up his ...

Re: New boat not so new anymore

So it sounds like you have sent it back to Duckworth for the repairs?
Is insurance covering?
What sort of fix are they proposing to do?

A guess . . . probably have to cut away about a 3'-4' wide section of the hull side down to the chine along with the corresponding gunwale and then piece in ...

Re: My new North River Seahawk Offshore 24'

Do you still leave it in the water year-round? Looks like the paint hasn't thinned-out anywhere down to the epoxy primer and I don't see evidence of hard growth so you might be good for another year or two. On the other hand, since you are hauled out a refresh of the anti-foul wouldn't hurt. If you ...

Well you forced me to find my reading glasses Kevin and take a closer look . . . and it's still hard to tell for sure. The forefoot could be rough from beaching or intentional grounding . . . or some poor investigative grinding. I get a fair amount of nasty looking hulls like this one that even in ...

Re: Should I avoid this boat

I'll stick my neck out and say this boat looks bad but might not necessarily be a boat to avoid without having a closer look than what is provided by the photos. The main concern is whether there is serious pitting or is it primarily just paint failure associated with galvanic activity?

Marinette's ...

Depends a great deal on size of boat. Most of the bigger manufacturers are self bailing down to about 24 ft length then it starts to get hard to keep the deck above the waterline.

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions

I'll comment that if the pitting in the bilge adjacent to the black lighter is the worst of it and the bottom is otherwise intact and not beat in from rock groundings I don't see much of a reason to double plate the hull. If the hull is otherwise fair but you are contemplating some tough beachings ...

Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting

Cathodic overprotection can occur if magnesium anodes are used in salt or brackish water. Is it possible that your boat was previously equipped with magnesium anodes? We have big lakes here close to our marine waters and it's not uncommon for a lake boat with magnesium anodes gets sold to someone ...
