Re: White Metal Welding 18' RI Builder

Great looking boats. The 14.5 skiff looks pretty stout. Starting to see more alloy in the NE these days. I was down on the Cape last weekend and stopped by a local welding shop to check out a flat bottom skiff being built. It's really got my gears turning.

Re: Need some input?

Well unfortunately? It sold before I got there.... Maybe it's a sign? Seemed to be a cheaper option than building? I'll find another soon enough... Thanks guys. Can't wait to document a build or rebuild here.

Re: Need some input?

Thanks guys, all things I've thought... I feel like I've learned enough from my last boat to stay out of trouble... It doesn't look like the most heavy duty hull, but at least it's welded and not plastic. I don't have a ton of money to work with and the wife really wants to get back on the water. I ...

Need some input?

Alright, I may have found a boat I am going to look at. Its short money but might fit my needs with some modification? Heres the link.... http://maine.craigslist.org/bod/4552449085.html Not my ideal configuration... Listing says cuddy is built out of plywood.... If the hull wasn't damaged or horribl...

Re: 16' aluminum skiff

Thanks for sharing this stuff guys. I have a question for Kevin regarding the boat shown... Would you build the floor bracing as shown in the above picture if you were going to then cover (weld in) it with a sheet of aluminum for a flat floor?

Thanks

Re: Brockway Skiff

Thanks for the offer John. I do have a Miller but I think it's a bit small for what I really want to do (millermatic 175). I think I'll try to sell it and look for something larger that already has a spool gun. I have also seen spool gun setups with control boxes that get connected to a power source...

Re: Worm drive

I think I'm following the saw setup, but do you happen to have a photo of the actual saw? Sounds like a second handle is pretty key to having good control... When I finally build, I plan on cutting everything with a circular saw so I'd like to get all the info I can. Slightly off topic, but do you (...

Holy cow, that would be awesome. When I am ready to actually get a bit more serious I'd like to take you up on that. Funny the wife says to me yesterday, I really miss having a boat we should get another one... After having a couple of welded boats (none of which were all that amazing) I don't think...

Re: Brockway Skiff

I found it on a google image search. I think it is Old Wharf Boats of Wellfleet Ma design built in aluminum by a guy in Maine? I kinda think there would a market for such a craft. Very common on the Cape with shell fisherman, built in aluminum it would be awesome? Maybe an 18' with a little center c...

Brockway Skiff

Hey guys, I've been somewhat obsessed with the idea of building a Brockway type skiff. I really like the simple lines and no nonsense look of a plain old flat bottomed skiff. I'm just in the day dreaming stages as of now, just wondering if any of you builder guys have any input on adapting plywood s...

Re: Craigslist Maine

I was thinking that. 10k seems pretty good for a 2002? I would be interested if I were the market. Cut that pilot house off and build a cool center console or doghouse and have a great boat for short money.

I would agree! Looks like he's been doing some pretty nice work. You must be proud (of the boy and the boat). I can't believe how fast this thing is coming together. I will continue to live vicariously through your posts.

Re: The Journey Begins

Did you run the tig torch around both ends of all of the rod holders? No filler rod added? Just to smooth out the sharp edges?

I love seeing the updates. You guys have been working hard and it shows. Keep up the good work.

Re: Weld In Flush Mount Rod Holders

Have you had any trouble with the pipe splitting? Do you use a shop press with the die. That is a great idea, looks like manufactured rod holders for a fraction on the cost. Now I just need to get my hands on a die, or a lathe to make one.

Keep up the good work.

How did you go about flaring the pipe? Are you going to press a roll pin in the bottom? Looking good!
