Re: Work boat and paint over a soildly bonded existing but worn paint surface

There's all kinds of paint systems you could use, one way would be to give the boat a light sandblast to clean everything up and get a consistent profile on all the surfaces, apply a coat of multi-purpose 2 part epoxy, scuff that up and then roll on whatever topcoat enamel you might want on there. W...

Nicest thing I've seen like that is the Rock Salt 34 designed by Response Marine. I'll bet they would gin something similar up for you. So your cat is coming up to Seattle? Been so long can't remember what it was like . . .

Re: Its all new to me grounding vrs. Bonding???

Guilty! Yeah, the term "ground" is just too easy to use in these quick discussions but Kevin is right about using proper terminology. The green wire that comes aboard in an 120v AC shore power connection is a "ground" wire and your hull is grounded to earth through it when shore power is plugged in ...

Is that a vinyl covered plywood deck in the forward section? Don't want that aft? Aluminum diamond plate across the large spans in your framing I think would end up flexing under weight?

Re: Its all new to me grounding vrs. Bonding???

You need an aluminum anode(s) securely mounted to the hull, usually at the transom if you are mooring in saltwater or brackish/polluted fresh water. In really clean fresh water you might want your hull anodes to be magnesium. You'll want your hull connected to battery ground but no need for a big ca...

With boat on trailer fill the bilge or the bracket with water and see if any water leaks out

Re: Painting aluminum: preperation details

Good info there Kevin, thanks for the write-up. Am I to understand, then, that when choosing to prep aluminum with chemical treatments that we are simply developing a chemically induced anchor pattern on the metal? And that a chromate layer provides a better anchor point for coatings than acid etche...

Re: General opinion of Hewescraft Ocean Pro?

Low deadrise, forward mounted pilothouse boats are a rough ride in heavy chop, no way around that, alloy or fibberglass. Not sure what you are using the boat for but moving the house as far aft as possible makes a huge difference in comfort if steep wind waves is your everyday deal. A custom boat fr...

Those hand held drum sanders do a real nice job. Depending on the brand they either use an inflatable drum or the drum is built like a flap sanding wheel

Re: Blasting VS Sanding For New Paint

Personally I think the ultra short fuse meme on getting primers onto freshly abraded aluminum is overblown. I would pay more attention to cleanliness, thoroughness in sanding, meeting temp & humidity reqmts, application technique, mix ratios, etc., stuff that will have more bearing on the success of...

Re: Blasting VS Sanding For New Paint

I would not do acid wash/alodine, etc for interior work, that is some nasty stuff. Clean the metal, sand it, clean it again with hot thinner, apply Pettit etch primer then tie coat primer then Zolatone. Pettit has a kit http://www.pettitpaint.com/product.asp?id=82 they sell it as an underwater kit b...

Re: Blasting VS Sanding For New Paint

Thanks Kevin but it should also be added that I'm a "one trick pony" in that field of expertise because my prep processes for painting aluminum include either sand blasting or . . . sand blasting. I get away with that because I only do boat bottoms and in that case all the sand ends up on my nice sm...

Re: Flats Boat

Kev, if the OP is checking in from the SE a flats boat is a shallow draft v bottom w/low freeboard. Think of the pics you've seen of guides on aft platforms poling their client along in thin water as they stalk bonefish but then when its time to move on they fire up the 200 hp short shaft outboard a...

Pulse welding can be a nice system but he shouldn't need to grind any welds even with a more conventional rig. At any rate it looks like the new boat might be the best choice if you are stuck on owning that brand assuming the price on all these is CDN?

Re: Zincs on aluminum hulls

Thanks, Chaps! There is a nice little 1 inch extension of the hull planning surface at the transom that would make for a mounting location that doesn't pierce the hull. What are your thoughts regarding zincs in the bilge? I keep the boat on a trailer with bow up and the drain plug out, but salt wat...
