Comparing Hulls:Movement Names- Pitch

I'm modeling a very simple shape flat bottom skiff so there are fewer lines on screen and the shape is easier to illustrate. here the skiff is bow on to a wave and therefore the bow pitches up and down. Pitch is the name for the rotation of boat's waterplane on a transverse 'axel', I show a play gro...

Re: The Journey Begins

goatram, let me encourage you to make all effort to lift the cabin top OR drop the deck, don't allow the original boat to make your head bang or brush the ceiling/cabin top lining!!!! 'Spoiled one' is preaching to you Brother !! he's telling you the Gospel in (metal) Boats: it's yours- make it fit Y...

Comparing Hulls: Waterplane Volume

fisherman, we're getting there but I realize its not very quick!! Let's add some boats to what we just discussed, the reason I use geometric shapes before was to make the points obvious graphically. Here's a skiff shape, that will help review the ideas we've got up to this point. I realize that many...

Comparing Hulls: Buoyancy again

mojomizer, thanks for your interest. I hope this is working step by step, but if not then we'll get after some corrections or clarifications once I get some more up to on this topic. We've discussed the "Body Plan" view of the hull and I'm going to dig in there a bit. A jon boat's section ...

Comparing Hulls:More Buoycancy

mojo, yes temp and salinity both influence the wt of water so they both effect wt and to some degree density of the water too. (Cold water operation of propellers were found to need different pitches in WWII when the "ply-layered-dead-plant" PT boats were run in Alaska instead of the warme...

Re: Comparing Hulls: MORE (!) Basics

I've reread what's posted and decided I needed to make a few more basic points, I know that I'm back to flogging the deceased equine :deadhorse: but.... if we start to make shape and immersion illustrations without some of these points "landed, gutted and iced" -we'll end with some readers...

New Propulsion System...misunderstanding terms

Tim, Barry thanks for the reply. I’m sorry that Barry misunderstood what I posted, shown by his incorrect paraphrase of my post; Barry: "The comment that the thrust in a water-jet is developed in the intake via ram is incorrect.” That shows I’m not communicating very well! I didn’t say or mean ...

Re: Pipe bender

Bob, the ribboning has to be quite close together to give a smooth curve, the rewelding become extensive, all to get a 1/2 or full pipe if you put the other half of the pipe inside the bulwark? There are no extrusions the size you're discussion with a flat surface that will not require forming or at...

Re: Comparing Hulls

To keep the topic moving I'll introduce a couple of exaggerated images, the reason for my exaggeration is to create a mental picture that we keep with us as we try to discuss shape and performance. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/Hull%20Lines/Centers_1A.jpg first is the ide...

Re: New Propulsion System...

Well, slap me with a cold dead halibut- alongside the head :skillet: !! these props/impellers are not fully axial (prop/fan/impeller) but they oscillate (rotate AROUND a small center) therefore avoiding the 'jet' pumps three or four limits, this won't need a stator behind the flow to keep the nozzle...

Comparing Hulls: More Lines

We're going to be discussing the hull's shape and how a given shape performs, so we need to begin to 'see' waterlines or waterplanes or the planing surface of the hull in the water. This is not the simplest thing to illustrate so we'll begin with some basics. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273...

Guys this is just a 'dual prop' axial flow water pump, the same evolution of concentric shafts that Volvo brought to the inboard/outdrive 'leg' but in this case, applied to the Hamilton pump. Axial flow is axial flow. This won't change the physics of pumps but it may give them more flow in certain t...

Comparing Hulls: More Terms and Lines

I don't want to beat a dead horse :deadhorse: but... (and everyone likes a nicely rounded stern) I'd already done some sketches for netman's skiff build and the lines article that we can reuse to make sure we're all talking the same lingo. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/Hu...

Comparing Hulls: Flare and Flam

Just keep bringing up the questions if they get lost, I'm doing a bit of sketching to reduce the text so we'll get to the additional questions, mojo entry is a 'biggie' coming along shortly. Fisherman, more terms but some visuals to go along. Sculpin, I'll add the Cope to the shape discussion as we ...

Re: Comparing Hulls: Basics of Lines Plans

We’re not really going to get into a full blown boat design post here, at least I don’t anticipate that because there’s lots of hours of study and working out problems and trying to design (draw and calculate) for yourself as you study the overall topic. But…. (everyone likes a nicely rounded stern)...

Re: Pipe bender

ehsvp, ordinarily that would be rolled with a pyramid roller guiding the operator either templates or putting the pipe up and down, onto the boat, and working below the sheer with the roller. You use the pipe sized dies and then a flat roller on the other side for 1/2 pipe, in your case you'd be rol...

Re: Corrosion Repair

paddler, drilled out rivets are a pain if you can't work to the back side, even if you were to replace with plastic washers and even plastic sleeves the seal with rivets isn't the best. I'd want to look at threaded stud mounted hardware but that implies working the back side of the surfaces, so if t...

Re: Corrosion Repair

paddler, the cause of the corrosion is the (methods of) installation of the fasteners and the windows, but its not limited to Hewes' boats the practice is widespread and the reason is either ignorance or an unwillingness to build well? I have seen less than year old boats from Hewes with many other ...

Re: Comparing Hulls

Fisherman, I'd put the new Hull E closest to C as the chine of A is much higher compared to the keel in A's forefoot; so that A is closer to D than C or E from what I can tell. Still like to have all three views or a lines plan set, to make any kind of 'true' statements. But this surely confirms moj...

Re: Zolatone vs. What?

Karl, the paint and zinc are not harmed in my experience, the galvanized is brightened by not removed. Paints, plastics, rubber and other elastomeric products all seem to do OK, but I'm not saying the acid stays long. Once sprayed, spread, painted, put on the metal, it only takes a minute or two (no...
