Re: Marinette cruiser hull extension

Msmithabr, I'm not lecturing, just noting that we'll need to have common terminology in order to share information about your hull and the proposed conversion to articulated surface drive from the keel boat she was designed to be. The hull lines (of any hull) are very specific and need to be underst...

Re: Marinette cruiser hull extension

msmithabr, I've extended quite a few hulls of this rough size, but all were welded hull's (or plastic hull add-ons) and this one appears to be (at least) partially riveted?  Don't know that for sure as the pics aren't zoomed in on the surfaces of the hull all that closely? In this building material,...

Re: Squished Gregor - Last Rites?

richas, if you drill out (the rivets) and separate the gunwale extrusions from the topsides sheet metal (?) they'll bend in very different manners. Therefore if any recovery is going to happen, you might try separating the two pieces then pressing or hammering the topsides into so reasonable pre-cru...

Re: Strange discoloration on aluminium hull

tonish123, this remark is based on the 3rd photo which appears to be 'vertical up'? that is; taken from the ground under the hull looking upward? From this photo I'd say the boat was formerly on bunks on the trailer instead of rollers that appear in the current photos- and I'm basing that guess on t...

Re: What Type Of Corrosion?

Is there anyway that this could happen   That's kind of hard to answer Hunter24.  Speculating about corrosion on a few photos is sort of low quality information (as a reply). Since you know that once the internal foam is potentially involved you also know that you have to pull the deck and confirm ...

TinCup yes, that does look like flowering on un-etched surfaces and acid etching will sure knock down what's there and prevent it happening more deeply or causing damage. Could be said of any part of a welded aluminum boat.  Spraying overhead isn't the most pleasant work- full oil skins and full PPE...

Re: CORROSION!!! And lots of it.

Rock'62, I'd remark about the newer photos in context of the first set you posted.  1st.   I'd say there might be two separate but related instances of the corrosion in your bilge.  One seems to be the concentrated material that resulted in a very wide patch uniformly corroding the entire area of th...

Re: CORROSION!!! And lots of it.

Rock'62, Portable TIG is somewhat compromised over shop TIG due to the power supply requirements and the most common solutions to that equation.  I'd spend most of my time, were I in your shoes, working to get the skiff seen by a shop, in their own facility.   You can save yourself some of the costs...

one3, Thanks for helping the Forum enjoy the build of this lovely welded beauty. Went to some of your past utube vids and and it appears Bill Lincoln was involved (?) would be nice to confirm his lines? Next, and very appealing, is the extrusion and welding treatment of the shear.  Is the outside co...

One3, very nice looking skiff, Downeast lines for certain: https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/the-west-pointer-18/  This one in the link isn't a nice welded metal skiff but the lines are there too. Would be worth the time, IMO, to show some detailed photography of the interior and finish?  Thanks...

noex'2, A couple remarks about  bending 6061 T6 pipe. As the pipe is pulled by one part of the bender around the shaped inner die- most pipe will deform at the two edges of the die- if 12:00 if up and 6:00 is inside the bottom die the 3:00 & 9:00 are the top edges of the die.  This 'egging' or ...

Chaps, What is your impression of the keel extrusion on the forefoot?  Although I can't zoom to very close image w/o some pixelation; the extent of the pitting seems to involve the weld face and the entire extrusion? I that a picture of protruding VKB between the two bottom plates? OR is a V extrusi...

TN4thGen Welcome to the AAB.com Forum. Tom, the new photos really help put the photos above into a better location reference!  Now I can see that a shot from on deck into the cabin sole framing wasn't looking aft!  Now that you show the after deck from above; the below deck image makes complete sense- but I'd not been able to infer corre...

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions

Tom, i'd like to remark about using embossed plate/tread plate/diamond tread and my experiences with it.  First is the alloy- usually 6061 or 3000 series and very rarely 5000 series - so its brittle in the sense that as sheet it will crack if something heavy and sharp it dropped on it- like a 2x6 en...

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions

Tom, I don't recommend the double hull plating for the reason that you'd be creating a 'super cell' of corrosion unless the entire inner area (volume between sheets) was air tested very thoroughly and all 'leakers' TIG floated and retested. My reason goes like this;  #1 the sheets won't fit one to o...
