Thought I would share a pic of a locally built 35' patrol boat I'll be bottom painting in the coming week. Will be equipped with triple 300 o/b's. It gets foam collars installed into the side recesses

Re: Bottom Paint ??? What are you using???
If you are going to apply Armor over Ultima suggest you clean and sand the bottom then roll on one coat of Seahawk 1277 primer then two coats of Armor over that. Not sure what you mean by putting both on the same boat but you would be running a comparison test between the two ;-) just don't mix them...

Re: Bottom Paint ??? What are you using???
Which aluminum compatible antifouling paint is the best? That's a question I've been working to find the answer to for many years since I bottom paint boats as an occupation and I want to use the most effective products I can get my hands on. Glass boats are easy since there are several excellent pr...

Yup, have a thick flange made for the perimeter of the hole, weld in place while clamping the wavy transom plate to it.

Re: Lower unit paint/corrosion issues.
It kinda looks like the original factory aluminum anodes were replaced with a zinc anode kit which will not adequately protect an outboard motor and shouldn't even be avail on the parts aftermarket IMO. The lower unit housing is lower nobility than the currently installed zinc anodes so the LU housi...

I'm under lots of contemporary alloy boats (painting bottoms) and I've seen that pin hole issue only once in a home built . . . wish I knew what brand you are talking about I'd keep a close eye on 'em

Re: Electrolysis
Chaps Thanks for the reply, what you are seeing in the hull photos is the epoxy barrier coat and ablative non-copper paint which was pressure washed. Interesting about the Evinrude motor anode issue, I will replace all the anodes this winter and make sure that they all have a good connection. Is th...

Re: Electrolysis
Pictures can be deceiving but it looks like your hull might have been painted with copper antifoul paint which, if that is the case, will be causing quick anode depletion on both hull and engine and corrosion on the engine since the castings on the motor are typically lower on the galvanic scale tha...

Trailers vary in length, and will vary in length from boat to boat so there is no accurate way to answer your question

Re: Maine downeasters vs. PNW aluminum boats
My 2¢ 1. With wood and fiber glass the designs are infinite, with aluminum you have to take what the metal will give you because it is so difficult to form. One of our forum members recently had a boat designed by C Raymond Hunt, variable deadrise type which was a challenge for the builder as I unde...

Re: Interior Paint For Alloy Boats
All the coating companies publish info on "systems" which includes prep & prime recommendations for different top coats that they make. Generally if you are going to sandblast first then epoxy primers work the best but do some research on the manufacturers websites or talk to the deale...

Re: Clean edge paint removal
download.jpeg It would be tedious but possible to mask the spots and blast them with glass bead using a hand-held blaster. Use heavy vinyl tape, a circle punch to make holes in the tape, place the punched tape over the problem areas, protect any remaining good painted areas with more tape, get some...

Keep in mind that earth grounding from a hot boat can simply occur from boat to mud with no outside metal involved.

Re: Corrosion advice
Typically yes, even with the battery on it wouldn't make a difference if the boat was out of the water. If it is in the water (and the battery is on) stray current damage can occur in a tight area and very rapidly, shortest path to earth ground using the salt water as a pathway is the likely spot. I...

Re: Corrosion advice
On second look at your photo of the hole and your comments regarding electrical issues on the boat there is the possibility that the hole could be the result of stray current corrosion and not the galvanic foreign object suggestion I described above. If there is a weak DC+ short to the hull in the c...

Re: Corrosion advice
IMO standing water alone won't cause that problem however if a non-aluminum chunk of metal (like a stainless screw for instance) was resting at that point inside the hull and immersed in salt water over a long period of time then an active galvanic corrosion cell was created at that point that cause...

Re: Hull Pitting / Flowering
Its an older aluminum boat that is showing the cosmetic effects of being setup wrong from the beginning though it appears that no significant damage has been done so why all the worry? Pitting due to galvanics will likely stop when you fix the anode situation. The ultimate solution if you want to go...
