Re: CORROSION!!! And lots of it.
Rock'62, I'd remark about the newer photos in context of the first set you posted. 1st. I'd say there might be two separate but related instances of the corrosion in your bilge. One seems to be the concentrated material that resulted in a very wide patch uniformly corroding the entire area of th...

Re: CORROSION!!! And lots of it.
Rock'62, Portable TIG is somewhat compromised over shop TIG due to the power supply requirements and the most common solutions to that equation. I'd spend most of my time, were I in your shoes, working to get the skiff seen by a shop, in their own facility. You can save yourself some of the costs...

Metal Health, Never met One-3 before, he's on the East Coast and I'm in Alaska, but I have built a few welded aluminum boats and will say the anyone that can build as clean a welded aluminum hull as One-3 surely- has experience with aluminum boats I respect One-3's work as I do few builders that c...

salmonator, Zep Chemical Co. can't sell the mixture in all locations due to (all sorts of) CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES regulations in different States. We've seen several comments here, in the past, about lack of availability in some one's area due I think to hazardous chemical regulations? Don't have a...

one3, Thanks for helping the Forum enjoy the build of this lovely welded beauty. Went to some of your past utube vids and and it appears Bill Lincoln was involved (?) would be nice to confirm his lines? Next, and very appealing, is the extrusion and welding treatment of the shear. Is the outside co...

One3, very nice looking skiff, Downeast lines for certain: https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/the-west-pointer-18/ This one in the link isn't a nice welded metal skiff but the lines are there too. Would be worth the time, IMO, to show some detailed photography of the interior and finish? Thanks...

noex'2, A couple remarks about bending 6061 T6 pipe. As the pipe is pulled by one part of the bender around the shaped inner die- most pipe will deform at the two edges of the die- if 12:00 if up and 6:00 is inside the bottom die the 3:00 & 9:00 are the top edges of the die. This 'egging' or ...

Re: Should I avoid this boat
Chaps, What is your impression of the keel extrusion on the forefoot? Although I can't zoom to very close image w/o some pixelation; the extent of the pitting seems to involve the weld face and the entire extrusion? I that a picture of protruding VKB between the two bottom plates? OR is a V extrusi...

TN, I figured your interest was because of a 'fire sale' price. So I'll remark about that for bit. And to offer those remarks I want to tell about one of my long time, close friends, who welded for me earlier in his career and has built or worked on welded aluminum boats for many years- nearly 40 th...

Annual Donation Post to the Forum. Every year I write an appeal (rant) about reading the site and not contributing anything as rent support for Welder. Welder has kept us all ‘digitally housed’ by his own generosity; funding the site and handling all the work of maintaining and updating the bulleti...

Re: Should I avoid this boat
TN4thGen Welcome to the AAB.com Forum. I can't see enough detail in the photos to be absolutely certain of my advice regarding the proposed boat but my first impression is; AVOID owning this boat. The level of damage done by using the hull as an anode - instead of having anodes to protect the hul...

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions
Tom, the new photos really help put the photos above into a better location reference! Now I can see that a shot from on deck into the cabin sole framing wasn't looking aft! Now that you show the after deck from above; the below deck image makes complete sense- but I'd not been able to infer corre...

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions
Tom, i'd like to remark about using embossed plate/tread plate/diamond tread and my experiences with it. First is the alloy- usually 6061 or 3000 series and very rarely 5000 series - so its brittle in the sense that as sheet it will crack if something heavy and sharp it dropped on it- like a 2x6 en...

Re: 24.5ft NW pilothouse restoration. Corrosion/flooring questions
Tom, I don't recommend the double hull plating for the reason that you'd be creating a 'super cell' of corrosion unless the entire inner area (volume between sheets) was air tested very thoroughly and all 'leakers' TIG floated and retested. My reason goes like this; #1 the sheets won't fit one to o...

Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting
allan, my comment or reply is about bonding the DC Neg Bus to the hull. This should be done from the battery Neg. or the Neg. buss if you have one ? It can be done with a battery sized cable, and a copper lug soldered to that cable (silver solder is good) and then shrink wrapped above the sleeve so ...

Re: Wrong brush used on boat
doug, The main problem with a steel alloy brush instead of a nickel steel alloy is the rustable steel particles off the wire, left behind. I don't think this will damage your boat permanently? I'd expect the areas to show rust (stain) if wetted where steel was left behind? But the alloy of the wire ...

Re: 17' Valco Bayrunner leak problem
silverstreak1, I'd vote the primary problem was from the foam in the bilges? If you search a little in the recent posts we've seen several photographic examples of the results of poured in foam holding thin films of water in the bilge against hull metal, for long periods. The bilge water, if allowed...

Re: 17' Valco Bayrunner leak problem
silverstreak1, that is good news for your leak problems that your boat is welded. I looked up the Valco and found most of them (details not all that great online) have a chine that is an 'inside V' insert type of extrusion and as near as I can see? (again, online images not great) the welds are excl...

Re: 17' Valco Bayrunner leak problem
silverstreak1, I agree with Chaps, those older, mainly riveted, hull seams have seen a lot of flex in their life. So leak testing may help you find and patch locations where the hull isn't tight any longer. One thing that is kind or hard to overcome in that type of test- is to locate the exact spot ...

Re: bringing home a new boat.
Sparky508, I can see your problem getting the acid rinse done well on a boat with a sealed deck. Your idea of driving around to 'slosh' the mixture around isn't half bad! If you have any inspection ports in the deck? and could use a 'spray wand' to reach the chines and outer areas of the bilge? I ag...

Re: Help with large (900liter / 243 gallon) aluminum diesel tank design
lc32, as mentioned above, I would look for some insulating material- like sheet plastic but... not a full sheet film. If you took 1/8" HDPE and put it on the table saw and put a grid recess pattern (checkered) about 1/6" deep cuts- then the capillary action that creates a wide area thin fi...

Re: Help with large (900liter / 243 gallon) aluminum diesel tank design
LC32, Coatings are only as reliable on aluminum as the prep- if the tank is well etched after mechanical abrasion- sand blasting being the best sander next, and an alloydne (chromic acid resulting in a chrome oxide film over the bare/raw aluminum) solution put on while the etched metal is still wet ...
