Re: Almost new boat and new to the forum
sealion, carpeted bunks over copper treated wood is not going to do your hull any good. The carpet has caused countless guys to get poultice corrosion cells under welded boats and the copper solution in the wood treatment is worse! Combining the two is just building in a failure point in your boat. ...

25' Alloy Build: welding details
Another detour before we get back on the main road is to review welding aluminum just a little because this is still an area where there is a general lack of knowledge even among alloy boat owners who don't weld. Aluminum is welded by two main processes TIG- 'tungsten inert gas' (or GTAW Gas;Tungste...

25' Alloy Build: Jigs, fixtures, tools
Well, I guess I was getting ahead of myself. I said in the preface that I'd make the boat a little different that the 'normal' methods to help compensate for my old carcass. Here I'll make some of those differences known so readers won't think this thread is by a complete fool. (maybe partially a fo...

25' Alloy Build:Design Decisions II
chaps, goatram, sldave, thanks for the encouragement; I suspect that PNW readers/boaters will find the design choices made closer to their own ideas compared to those who live in warmer latitudes where several of the choices has less impact on year round boating? I usually forget to mention a drawin...

25' Alloy Build: design concept
Design decisions I tried to allow the boat owner to make the design decisions on this boat. I know that doesn't sound unreasonable, but it was more work as a design than most I've done in the past. I don’t agree with many of the decisions in this design; but my goal was to be the hands that drew- no...

25' Alloy Build
Since welder has so kindly created a "custom build" space here, and I'm not doing production work, I will add another thread here documenting a boat I'm building on a one off basis. Preface This thread is to show a boat built of the Miracle Metal by cutting and welding for those who don’t ...

Re: acid washing your Alloy...
welder, goatram, I would add to my (novel length?) post on etching or acid cleaning aluminum that the acids will all dilute to such minute/low/miniscule concentrations they're less active than vinegar down the sink. So neutralizing (using a base to counter the ph until neutral) them is not important...

Re: Jimmy Gravois is at again
Welder, I asked for a picture of the framing of a Gravois BOAT and you post something from Caterpillar - like a 60 yard, strip-mining, drag line bucket!! Obviously this boat is the toughest boat for its size I have ever seen. Does Jimmy & Co. draw these 'boats' or is there a naval architect with...

Re: Jimmy Gravois is at again
Interesting topsides plating technique to get the hollow flair instead of the one pieces side flam more common in this size skiff. By planking vertically with 'hour glassed' shaped pieces and pulling to an internal set of frames and stringer the builder was able to get a good hollow in the bow while...

Re: Net Skiff Build
Randy, I'm not in any hurry, I'm working on a skiff myself (not a net skiff) and enjoying the shop time quite a bit. As long as I can melt the Miracle Metal together I'm content- when I can do that in a skiff build, well it's a good thing . let me know when I should get the next few steps posted and...

Re: Longitudinal Twist...
acctTwrs, I'm not sure you're seeing the relative stiffness of the (welded) boat in considering (possible) torsion as something to consider? If we made a tower assembly of 1/8" tube soldered together, the individual tubes could and would bend, or deflect. But if the same tower/tube assembly is ...

Re: Canadian alloy cat!
Mike, the other pages confirm my suspicions about the boat's intended waters: flat, inland, calm. Notice the same designer has a very high deck/bridge panel 40' and 44' cats on the other pages? These are more open sea boats so I'll suspect he doesn't intend this cat to go outside sheltered waters, a...

Net Skiff Build: Bottom Shape Forward
netman, in order to 'see' how 'sharp' or narrow the bottom is you'll need to "do a construct" of the body plan or section view of the lines at the stations you've used in your grid. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/Hull%20Lines/Lines_7a.jpg I hope this illustration...

netman, we're discussing the forward bottom shape and I want to review a bit of what's been shown, here and in other topics and posts. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/Hull%20Lines/COMPARE_1A.jpg these two skiff hull forms are being used to illustrate this aspect of your cur...

Re: Canadian alloy cat!
I agree with Chaps this hull looks, as much as can be seen in the video, as a "split monohull with a bridge over the two halves". Where the design totally fails is the forward third of the hull. Cats are a design challenge and this one will probably be fine in the flat calm bay of the vide...

Re: Net Skiff Build
Randy, AAB.com- I doubt you've missed me... but, I'm back with the digitally connected ! I ended up with a hard drive sector problem, a DSL modem problem and work related preoccupation! That was enough to slow down my already limited communications skills and abilities like going aground on the Nakn...

tower/console
AcctTwrs the tube work looks flawless. My only remark is a design question. If the you spent the time and effort to make sweet harmonious bends to the two different sized horizontals just above the console, why didn't you consider making the after hand runner align to the end of the top of the two h...

Re: Net Skiff Build
netman, Put some raked keel and transom lines down. I'd suggest you rake the transom aft 20deg's and the bow forward about 3' in 3' of rise. Then put in a keel. First draw the keel in profile and then 2" above that (in scale) draw a straight flat horizontal chine in the after 6' of the hull. Th...

Randy small emergency here. I have lost part of my drive and the photo-editing software was in that sector. Re: The "Tinny" sound?
fisherman, there are a couple of events going on there. I'll 'resonate' BroadCove's post. One is resonance a sort of 'internal echo' of the boat. Another is the harmonics, they're kind of related in some ways but in general they're different 'animals'. Depending on the boat, engine and drive you can...

Panga in welded alloy
Dawg, in all truth, that shape would build in welded alloy very well. It lends itself to 'planking' in sheet/plate and has numerous 'strakes' or longwise hull transitions that would build in aluminum. I can see two main reasons it is not readily offered, now, one is the increase in welding; the long...

Net Skiff Build: partial BOM
netman, yes a 2" bottom camber aft will be fine, the chines will rise to the bow stem as they curve in and that rise gives the bottom shape, if the working area forward is too steep you can extend the foredeck aft to cover the bottom further. I'd plan on using the 20x6 for the bottom plate and ...

Net Skiff Build: battens for drawing
Netman, I agree that wood battens can be fine, and will work but to make one from the pot strips you'll have to rip a narrow, uniform strip from the oak then plane/sand/fair the batten. The reason people use plastic is they're uniform and smooth but wood is great, and does a fine job. The main quest...
