Alloy Invades Florida
Another alloy invades Florida. The trip to see Marty Smith in Mt Vernon turned out to be a great vacation. And we sent home one hell of souvenir. Shipment was smooth and no damage. A bit of outfitting and we are back on the water. Stabidays are here again. http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv255/3f...

Hi Jetty,
Love SS props, hate rocks. Looking for a marriage made in paradise. I do not want my love for SS props to bend my shaft! As you know Gulf water can be mighty thin.

TBX hub
I deleted a earlier post about an E-tec prop shear device. What I was looking for was info about TBX hubs. Did not know that was their name. Do they reduce damage if you have a SS prop and encounter a prop strike? Anyone have this hub system?

Re: Hey, anyone seen an aluminum boat around here?
I also have been looking for an alloy boat to get back on the water. My wife and I went out to Mt Vernon to talk with Marty. We saw Tom Nelson’s old boat. We liked it. Now it’s our boat. The only problem is that big postage stamp to get it back here to Florida.

Is a head worth the space it takes up, or is the bucket the best way to go.

Are you "T" tipping?
How much does a “T” top play into lateral stability on alloy boats? Is being lighter a problem? How much is the wind a factor?

Is your bottom wet?
What are some of the issues of wet slipping your alloy boat? Is bottom paint the way to go?

Re: Miracle or snake oil?
Yes Jetty, I still have interest in an alloy boat. It just eludes me. My 401k is down 30%. The house is down 30%. But the boating industry, who is under more pressure than autos, is not discounting as much as I hoped. It’s putting out that first 65K that gets interesting in this economy.

Durafix, HTS-2000, etc they are all brothers at the core. This was an excellent analyst of what they are all about. I also added the cross section to photo bucket. From: "Barry L. Ornitz" <ornitz@tricon.net> Subject: Re: Help needed for Aluminium welding / soldering Date: Jun 05 1997 Newsg...

After a few more days in the drink. I will do a cross section cut with the saw to see how much is really in the hole and how well it sealed.

Re: Miracle or snake oil?
It has been 3 days in the soup, and some changes have taken place. The 5086 is starting to oxide to its nice stable gray. The HTS-2000 fill rod started to turn color within hours of submersion. You can see it is now almost black. Even with this dramatic color change I’m not seeing any interaction be...

Re: Miracle or snake oil?
Well just tried my first HTS-2000 hole repair. There were a few things I would do differently. The hole is 5/16” the plate .249 thick 5086. You need more heat than you think to reach melting point for the rod. Alloy is a great heatsink! When I got it hot I think it was a bit too hot. LASER temp guns...

Re: Miracle or snake oil?
I just ordered a piece of 5086 from McMaster Carr. When it gets here “ let the experiments begin!” I will get back to you with pics and results after a saltwater soak and maybe some low voltage electrolysis for good measure.

Re: Miracle or snake oil?
For S L Dave, A couple links about galvanic corrosion. Note this happens in the presents of an electrolyte (i.e. saltwater). So sealing will help. Also the second link on the metal compatibility chart looks to show most aluminum within the acceptable voltage difference for saltwater exposure. http:/...

My wife asked” what’s with this alloy boat thing anyway ”. I replied “ I’m not sure”. Then we sat down to discuses it over tea. Oh by the way, this is the kitchen set.

I have these rods. They worked on my small shop job. Do one of the pro metal guys on the form have an opinion on them. See link.
