MP350 Power MIG by Lincoln Electric
gandrfab, the power supply discussion can be long because this machine, as provided by Lincoln has #1 a few headaches, #2 some of them had factory defects #3 Lincoln won't support the MK Python supplied, originally, this power supply and #4 tuning the wire feed and the controls is not very similar t...

Re: New look
gypseas, I was suggesting stripper to reduce the work of sanding, if 80-90% of the paint is lifted and the stripper washed off, it's a lot less work to sand/buff. Chaps is right on, etching when you're done will leave a more uniform coloring, but it will also clean all the welds, crevices and tight ...

Re: Comparing Hulls: Charts of Speeds
We need to get into the terms used for the three speed ranges, a bit more exact than slow, faster and fastest. Speed is affected by the shape of the boat, and OVERALL (not exactly) we'll say the speed of each range will be most influenced by the length of the boat. Remember we're only considering bo...

Comparing Hulls: IMAGE WARNING!
Just a note to reaffirm that I'm simplifying physics in these images, they're for the sole purpose of giving a mental picture, which is often said to help retain information. I got a sort of disturbing email asking about details of one image posted above, the question implied that the image was the ...

Re: New look
simplify:
#1 use pro/toxic/hazardous paint stripper
#2 use sander with 100-120 to clean up the residue, then
#3 use buffer or belt sander with 3M Scotchbrite belts, then
#4 etch the hull and leave it bare.
Cheers

Comparing Hulls: Changing (SEA)states
Land vehicles are pretty specialized and not very often used too far outside their area of specialization. A dragster (fuelie, rail frame, slicks and scooter tires up front) is hardly useful to drive to the beer store in the afternoon. While a small sedan may be a better choice for the beer run, a P...

Comparing Hulls: Links in the Chain of Planing
There are many discussions that involve planing. This site is sort of a 'clearing house' site, its not focused on one type of boat, and it has a large commercial side for product sales. But here is small listing of conversations they've had/held/seen or posted where the word came up. http://forums.i...

Comparing Hulls: A Chain of Links
Mark, other readers we're at a fork in the road, either I define planing or I don't. I'm not going to define planing for all boats, I'm going to define our boats, or put a 'frame of reference' around these hulls and I'm going to stay inside that 'definition'. here's what's up. All the boat's we're r...

Re: Comparing Hulls: How Hard is Water?
Mojomizer, thanks for commenting, hopefully this will begin to come together? I have to admit when I first thought about trying to answer the overall question (hull shape comparisons) it didn't occur to me how much background was going to be needed to make a reasonable explanation. Well, we've talke...

Re: FaceBook on AAB
I keep photos on Photobucket and it does have some cost, annual subscription is about 30$ or so, but all I do to post an image here- is to copy the link to the photo/image URL there and paste it here. I keep the content there to avoid having the images saved here, instead of a free, real time, onlin...

Re: Comparing Hulls
Mark, jj, I'm not quite to that point, comparing hulls, we're still getting the basics drawn and posted but I will note that I have a brother who can tell if a person's voice or and musical instrument is just a small amount off key/out of tune. I can't tell that, in fact with a fairly large portion ...

Comparing Hulls: Hard Water
We've been reviewing the basics about what forces effect a boat's hull motion and therefore performance, but we need more background before we can begin the actual hull model movement comparisons. To continue; it's time to begin to look more closely at water's "internal chains", and specif...

Re: Comparing Hulls
sorry to be late in continuing this topic, work had become more involved and taken up more time. The Winninghoff shown, traveling at relatively low speed would 'cut' the waves well, then the abrupt transition to the more full shape would change the waterplane area and therefore buoyancy in the bow, ...

Re: Pipe bender
Tom, I'd say you're right the paper acts as a release or 'sticking prevent' so the pipe can move along the dies' length. The dies on the 555 Greenlee are cast aluminum, and while not exact , originally, they're too solid to move or change shape. The roller follower I was mentioning was not the pull ...

Re: Pipe bender
Tom, goatram, if you take the dies for aluminum pipe and polish them with fine sandpaper (gradually to 180-220grit) along the mid arch of the curve; mainly along the sides or 3:00/9:00 on the pipe, assuming the bottom of the die's round is 12:00.... ...THEN lube the pipe EACH bend with Pam fried foo...

Comparing Hulls: more Drag
I admit that its a drag to discuss, Drag, but we'll do it some more here. I'm hoping the images will help make a point, I'm trying to avoid getting too deep into physics and stay with rules of thumb, so if this isn't working, I won't know that unless you post a reply. If you Drag a chain, you've pro...

Re: Modifications: Doing it yourself questions.
Evil_Fish, tooling up yourself can be done at different levels, you don't need to go for the welding equipment unless you're going to stay with it, build more on this boat or eventually build your own skiff. 90% of the work of modifications is cleaning, fitting prep and tack up, weld out is very sma...

Re: Comparing Hulls: What a Drag!
gentlemen, thanks for the encouraging words, but let's talk about a 'drag' on boats. I'm more than willing to have some other definitions added here, and especially since I'm essentially giving rules of thumb for boat performance based on very broad approximations of the forces at work when the hull...

Hello from So Cal: Builder
evilfish, no this is not one of my skiffs. It uses similar shapes, that is the bottom and bow are similar but the details of construction are not any of mine. Adding a deck to void tripping on the structurals is reasonable, my choice would be plywood, and I'd coat it with epoxy and glass cloth and t...

Comparing Hulls: Momentum
We need to begin including more forces in this shape/movement discussion, we've already discussed the force lifting a boat is buoyancy and we need to add a few more. Momentum is the force equal to the speed times the weight (mass times velocity) and the heavier the weight, once it's moving at an equ...

Comparing Hulls: XYZ MOTIONS
Just above we looked at pitch, roll and yaw or rotational movement around the XYZ axises through the hull/waterplane and here we look at the entire boat moving in those directions. Admittedly, terms not commonly used today, but that's mainly because the discussion(s) are not very exact and I'm tryin...

Comparing Hulls:Movement Names- Pitch
I'm modeling a very simple shape flat bottom skiff so there are fewer lines on screen and the shape is easier to illustrate. here the skiff is bow on to a wave and therefore the bow pitches up and down. Pitch is the name for the rotation of boat's waterplane on a transverse 'axel', I show a play gro...
