Re: Bottom Paint flaking/hull pitting
Good analysis on the potential wiring issues there Kevin, been learning from your posts for years. On the paint problems it looks suspiciously like some low level positive DC is present in your hull, could be something hard to measure, less than a volt of +dc can raise hell. Anyway, what happens is ...

Re: 17' Valco Bayrunner leak problem
Without physically inspecting the boat anyone including myself would be guessing as to where all your issues are but suffice to say that a 30 year old aluminum thin hulled boat is likely suffering from multiple age, stress and corrosion related problems (just like us!). The old saying a "death ...

Re: Corrosion on kicker anode only
Your kicker anode is not welded, those are your hull anodes that are welded. All outboards, even big Mercury's with stainless props, are factory equipped with aluminum anodes. If you see an anode that is corroding that means it is working as designed, it is protecting the parts that it is attached t...

Re: Etching in video example
Hatcher, thanks for the pics. It appears that your issues primarily require paint removal which I can surely do with traditional sand blasting but the outcome of that process would result in an abraded profile on the underlying metal that realistically would then need to be repainted, it would be to...

Re: Etching in video example
Hunter, yeah, cosmetic rehabbing of boats like yours is where I'm going with this idea & process. If you could email me photos of the areas on your boat that need attention it would help me determine if my system (at its current level of refinement) might be suited to improving some of those iss...

Re: Etching in video example
OK, duly noted Kevin. Next chance I get to set the system up I'm going to apply the treatment to the sides of my old LaConner to see how it will clean up a crusty, oxidized and beat up "mature" hull.

Re: Etching in video example
Thanks Kevin, it is a white metal blast in a sense except that instead of leaving the surface profiled (or etched) as you would typically want for applying a coating the objective here was to leave a smooth, stripped surface that was ready for long term use as-is without further treatment. It's sort...

Re: Etching in video example
I've been developing a dry blast process that strips the mill scale and generates a sealed texture on bare alloy. . I feel its advantage over acid wash is it peens the surface which closes up the pores in the metal which greatly reduces and evens out oxidation and it cuts down on staining and grime ...

Re: pacific assassin build
Great boats, congratulations! However, we just bottom painted a brand new 26 Pacific and to my surprise they are still putting zinc hull anodes on at the factory. We swapped it out to an aluminum type for two reasons . . . First, zinc isn't quite reactive enough to properly protect aluminum hulls . ...

That's a beaut . . . plumb stem gives it a classic look . . . though might it be a rather blunt instrument at speed in typical offshore conditions?

Re: Line-X for boat hull?
Bedliner is not a particularly good choice, its likely not submersion rated (will eventually lose adhesion, particularly on aluminum). Epoxy paint in it's various forms would work better as an underwater capable coating. It is tough, would seal up the metal well and you could smoothly apply it yours...

Paint down to the top of the lower rail then bottom paint below that. Perhaps forego the upper rail, don't really need it and would simplify the rework

Re: Hull Corrosion
Thanks for the kind words Kevin, sorry Brent I have not checked in here for awhile. Your hull issues could have one of several origins as Kevin has opined but to me at first blush it closely resembles what happens to an aluminum boat that has been coated with copper bottom paint. Whatever the cause ...

Re: rub rail corrosion/pitting
Good info above. Its not a rare problem. One thing that I have repeatedly heard over the years is that black D rubber has chemical components that will galvanically react with aluminum particularly if the interface between the two is kept wet with sea water, likely culprit is the carbon black in the...

Re: bottom paint
I've been testing a bunch of aluminum friendly bottom paints last few years, some that were good in the past are now not so great. A fairly new paint that did well in my full season test last year is Seahawk Colorkote.
