Re: 16' aluminum skiff

Hi Kevin, Sorry I'm just getting back to this thread. Yes 5K is no home run. You are right that it probably needs to be closer to 6.5K. At this point no one is ringing the phone off the hook for these. Bill Lincoln and I have had a brief discussion about the while USCG regulations. It doesn't pay at...

Re: RockSalt 275

Customer showed up with a new REAL-X Trailer. Its definitely heavy - duty. The companies advertising decal were removed and a piece of vinyl was inserted down the length of the I beam. I think it added a nice custom look. In the water next week.

we added frames and a 1/2" plate to the transom about a year ago because of some cracking @ the lower motor bolts.

Safeboat vs. Rock

Not quite sure if the rock won?? I do know that if this was a NON ALLOY boat our local police would be swimming. This is a 31' Safeboat with twin 300 Verados. Since marine police only have two speed and this boat does around 50mph, you decide how fast they were going. It looks like the boat hit in t...

AH! We must meet this one called Blindchicken, AKA Rick. All kidding aside I'm one hour west of Rick. I use to work in Greenport. I'm sure he knows somebody I know out there. Maybe I can drag the RockSalt out there for a little show and tell.

Re: RockSalt 275

Acid wash is ZEP-A-LUME. I buy it in a truck supply, used to wash aluminum dump trucks. Mixed a little strong @ 4/5: 1. sprayed on with pump sprayer and lightly scrubbed in a straight line with a maroon scotchbrite pad. It takes two or three times to get it even. Everything gets rinsed with a hot wa...

Re: RockSalt 275

We're getting closer! Boat got an acid washed today. Customer dropped off the first motor. most of the boat is rigged. This boat is about as basic as we can build. The new EPA fuel system is installed. There is a FVV( fill vent valve ) on each corner of the tank. These fttings are "tee'd" ...

Re: 16' aluminum skiff

I think there are a few more refinements. I'm thinking that the basic boat is $5 K. At this point we have more time than that in this boat ,but it is the first one. Customer is supplying the rod holders he likes. I can weld yours in.

Re: 16' aluminum skiff

Well except for a few rod holders, the skiff is done. The" last one" as the customer has named her is waiting for a 30 HP Honda tiller. outboard A trailer has been ordered and will be here in two weeks. At that point we'll get an accurate weight and some pictures. Have another one to build...

Although the link may not work. I know what Kevin is describing. Blue Seas use to sell a similar packing gland. The base as machined delrin which had three countersunk screw holes. a threaded cable gland was threaded in the center. It is an easy way to add a thru the bulkhead fitting. I bought a few...

Re: RockSalt 275

weld a piece of 14" channel to the boat. will move the motor back just enough to get the bolts through. The only question is how the steering cylinder will clear. Hell get out the saw and just cut a few inches off. It can away be welded back on. Post a picture of the outboard @ the steering cyl...

Re: RockSalt 275

250 Yamaha's are hard to come by. I've been waiting for months. Yamaha said expect to see a shortage into 2015. There answer is upgrade to a 300hp, there in stock. If your jumping off of the cliff, what's the difference if you fall a little further?

Re: RockSalt 275

Dave, don't get Les or my blood pressure up. The customer is a commercial diver and wanted the platform this way. The platform is "not" measured as part of the boat.
The overall length of the boat is 29'6" .....

Re: 16' aluminum skiff

The channels are 6061 aluminum Association channel. They were chosen because they are a little lighter and it is the size the customer wanted on the bottom. This boat is a basic copy of one that he had in plywood. It was easier to use these than try and bend some flat stock. This boat will be put on...

Re: RockSalt 275

At this point the boat isn't getting trim tabs. For trim tabs we weld a strip of 1" plate to the back of the boat and drill and tab the tab on. The zinc gets bolted to a channel that is welded-on..

Finally starting to catch up and get back to shop projects. We added bottom stringers. The center is a 2 x 5 channel and the outsides are 1 x 2 channel. A little welding and a half pipe for the rub rail and we should be done.

There is a definite different in the price between waterjet and high def plasma cutting. Yarde metal has both. There plasma is much bigger than there waterjet. In very general terms, plasma adds about .25 cents/lb.,waterjet is a much slower process so its a bit more money. In my opinion plasma is fin...
