Re: Best filler wire for 5086?

kind of depends on what your trying to do. You can fill a 1/2" bolt hole with a mig gun. If the hole if from corrosion you are better off drilling out a bigger hole with a hole saw and weld in a plug. You can fill pretty good size hole with a Tig.

Re: Buy it!

The boat looks like it was built in 1973 by the hull ID. The company that built it went out of business in 1990. Not to many interior hull shots, but if was cared for she probably still has some life left in her.

Re: Best filler wire for 5086?

Don't let someone weld 5000 series aluminum (5052,5086,5083)with 4043 filler rod, its just wrong. I can't speak for Pacific skiff but the console is probably 5052 ( Its easier to bend) If they have the skills to TIG weld they should be able to weld with 5356 wire. If they can't find another welder. ...

Re: Has 5086 come down in price?

Yarde metals in ct. has a surplus list . If you buy the lot quantities the price is in the 1.70/ 1.80 per pound. They also seem to be a little more flexible. with the price on regular orders. The price of 6061 extrusions has come down 20 to 30 cents per pound. The price should continue to drop as su...

Re: Cost of aluminum boats coming down?

I build a few small boats per year and I am just starting to notice a small decrease in the price of aluminum. Price are all over the place as distributors try to get rid of higher price inventory. If you have a little extra money there are some deals on pallets of 5086/5083. Aluminum is a small por...

boat re-wire

Blue sea make some real nice electrical products. There artic white panels have circuit breakers. Some of there panels have fuses. I'd find a piece of 3/8 or 1/2" Starboard to recover the dash.

Flat bar is used when the boat is CNC plasma cut. There some advantages to this method. I think you can get a fairer shape. You are also welding the same alloys of aluminum.

I've built them both ways and prefer the flat bar because all the frames are preformed.

I worked for Thomas on and off for a number of years. That boat was built by Tom.

I might be able to answer any of the questions you have.

I now have my own company that builds aluminum boats.
