Re: biggest boat for a single 200

Depends on your definition of "haul butt" - what kind of cruise speed you hoping for? A 200 can push a good sized boat if you prop it right and have reasonable speed expectations. I guess that was the wrong term. I meant cruise to and from the tuna grounds at around 25 or so. When it's &q...

Re: My new North River Seahawk Offshore 24'

Probably would be best to try another dealer but this one seemed sure they would not. Did say they'd not put on the vinyl side stripes though. Another thing is I didn't want a Cheezee Loader trailer and they said no way to that as well and would not make any exceptions. So I guess it's biz somewhere...

Re: My new North River Seahawk Offshore 24'

I asked a dealer about the same type of paint job and they said it can't be done. What can't be done? What boat are you contemplating buying? Painting just the cabin inside and out. Or even just the inside. Not contemplating right now although I do like the 24' Cuddy which is not on the website. Be...

Re: Box Beam Construction?

Again Mr. Morin thank you for the explanation. The two articles were great.....for solving insomnia lol! Passed out after the first paragraph. Seriously though I do appreciate you taking the time to write up a very thorough response. Bottom line really is that it's just one other way to build a boat...

Re: Box Beam Construction?

Mr. Morin, forgive my ignorance. Never really thought about it and I've owned an alum. boat for almost 9 years lol! I was refering to box beam
below the waterline specifically longitudinal box beam bottom bracing.

Re: Box Beam Construction?

Mr Morin, thanks for the explanation. I was refering to a box beam used in the strengthening of the hull. One builder made it sound like it was almost distasteful to use this method the way he said it. He may not have meant to but it kind of sounded that way. Another just said it's one way of doing ...

Box Beam Construction?

Could someone please explain the pro's and con's of using a box beam construction in an alum. boat? I tried a search on the subject but couldn't find anything. All I really know is that a lot of builders won't use it while others will. Thanks.

Re: SWITCH

Yup that helps. I'm trying to decide if I want to have the builder do the install on the trim tabs or me do it. Not crazy about the idea as I'm sure it's a pain.... but on the other hand kind of pricey too. Maybe that's why lol!

Re: The Journey Begins

Boat looks great. Nice lines. Couple of questions. How wide are the sliding doors? How many gallons that bait tank hold? Any way you can split the tank so that you don't have to fill the entire tank up? I've seen it on plastic tanks.

Re: SWITCH

If you are going to use plastic wahsers in the first place, why use s.s. washers at all? How will they be effective when they are not going to be touching the metal and your plastic will be the weakest link. Should it crack and break off your s.s. washer isn't going to do much good.

Re: 95 Armstrong; To expensive?

I don't know anything about older Armstrongs, but I would much rather have a 15 year old commercial grade boat, than a brand new Hewes, Raider, North River, or any of the river boat builders for the same price. Would tend to agree if priced right. Still think it's a bit high for an 18 year old boat...

Re: 95 Armstrong; To expensive?

Planning on flying up to Seattle so decided to check into the boat a bit more. Current owner has had it since 05. Pulled the pod off and put in the current bracket. Had it painted too. Motor only has about 275 hours or so. Had a 2 stroke before that. Didn't think it was used much as the previous own...

Re: 95 Armstrong; To expensive?

Armstrong really doesn't build many mono hulls. I asked for a quote for a 22' and they never really gave me an exact quote but more or less said it was going to come in around 100k. I wonder if this was a Canadian Armstrong before they moved to Port Angeles? What changes have there been since then i...

95 Armstrong; To expensive?

Found this on CL and was wondering if you guys think the price is high for an 18 year old boat regardless of the motors. Actually, even the motor is suspect as there's a fair amount of info on the internet discussing corrosion on the Yamaha motors. http://victoria.en.craigslist.ca/boa/3686257739.htm...

Re: R&R Fuel Tank with Self Bailing Deck

Sorry, should have been a bit more clear and not have made it only about rust and ethanol. Current tank is fine. Boats never been dipped in acid just freshwater so no issues there and it's not a self bailing deck. I also use a fuel additive and have never found water in my fuel filters when changing...

R&R Fuel Tank with Self Bailing Deck

With the use of ethanol, water in tanks has become a real problem. I've read about tanks rusting out. So how does one pull a fuel tank out for repairs if a. you have a self bailing deck and b. it's welded in I've been looking at a lot of boats the past several months and it finally dawned on me last...

Re: Foam OR No Foam?

Sound insulation. Helps to dampen that "tinny" or "slap happy" sound that alum. boats make. Have been told by more than one builder. Some will spray it in while others use blocks. Tinny boats aren't made of 1/4 plate with 3/16ths" sides  Actually, that quote came ...

Yes and Maxweld is no longer in biz. Didn't Edwing stop building for a while as well? Personally, if a builder treats you like a $hit BEFORE you even buy the boat I wouldn't have anything to do with the guy or if his reputation preceeded him. Beauty of the internet is you can find out a whole lot ab...

Re: aluminum boat advise

Funny, I'm currently trying to decide between a Silver Streak CC and a Wooldridge CC 21’. I’ve seen the Wooldridge factory and like the structural design of their boats even with the lighter gauge. I haven’t seen the Silver Streak factory and their design, but I’m skeptical about the value of injec...

Is it me or the angle but the TJ looks like a toy next to the Cope. It's nice that there is someone building these types of boats. I liked the 23' Winter Harbor but there have only been 2 built. Not very easy to get out on a test ride. Specmar wasn't any better as I like Pollards design even more. H...

Thanks for the replies. Something to think about. Given the lenghty but informative reply by KM, it makes me think I'm on the right track for the boats I'm looking at to have built. Re: Time and Designs

How about a semi planing hull like the downeast designs? Some of the diesel models can do 20+ knots and burn like 4gph and weigh over 6k lbs to boot. If I lived on the east coast that's probably what I'd get.

5052 Question

Ok I'm a bit confused about 5052. Some say builders use it because it's less expensive. However, I've come across builders who use 5086 yet their boats are less expensive than the 5052 builders. I've talked to a few non production boat builders (kit builders) who say I really shouldn't use anything ...
