Re: Hull corrosion, Lifetimer. Advice sought.

Any of the common marine barrier coat epoxies will work fine though I wouldn’t use a “high build” type at least on the first coat as you want it to soak in and penetrate.

Re: Hull corrosion, Lifetimer. Advice sought.

I see a lot of pitted boats at Agate Pass Marine, my bottom painting yard. Typical causes: (not in any particular order and not limited to these) A. Boat has been painted at some point with copper type bottom paint and/or the hull was not properly primed with epoxy before it was originally painted a...

Re: Custom Accessory Fabrication Kitsap/Olympic Peninsula

There is a small shop, I believe in Keyport or Poulsbo, that builds accessory items like that for area boat builders. I'll try and find out the contact info.

Re: Cleaning up this hull

Probably best to talk to the manufacturer, I suspect it might respond to a chemical strip, perhaps a liberal application of lacquer thinner would soften it enough to wipe off or remove with a plastic scraper . . .

Re: Drydock or Slip?

I'm in the biz of prepping aluminum boats for salt water use and extended moorage. It is possible to keep that boat in the water but it needs a proper bottom paint job consisting of several coats of epoxy barrier primer paint overcoated with aluminum compatible bottom paint. Additionally it needs mi...

Re: clear coat

I've had newer boats show up at my bottom paint shop that had sharkhide (a well known clear coating for aluminum) applied to the bottom that the dealer told the boat buyer that it would work just like bottom paint . . . except nobody told that to the barnacles!

Harbercraft owns Kingfisher too. That Jetcraft was likely built by the original company organization though depending on its age.

Pretty sure that is a Jetcraft or a derivative, built in Oregon, pretty good boats, might be owned by Harbercraft now.

Re: electrical current in water

The shore power question is important, are you using that feature? If so be aware that the green safety ground wire in your boat's power plug receptacle needs to first connect to an on-board isolator before making its way to your AC panel so to prevent stray DC current that may be present in the mar...

Re: Crevice Corrosion Repair Procedure

Definitely take the opportunity to remove foam and find all the issues. If it gets to be a bigger prep & paint job than you feel like dealing with yourself we could likely help you out. I've got a big sandblast system and shoot lots of alloy boats (mainly bottoms). Look up Agate Pass Marine, pri...

Re: Crevice Corrosion Repair Procedure

Hey Cory, Ben's Cleaner Sales in Seattle will have aluminum cleaning, brightening products. Looks to me like you would do better with sandblasting though. You can pick up small, inexpensive blasters at harbor freight stores but blasting requires quite a bit of compressed air so you'll need a decent ...

Re: 10 Days in the salt

Not much can go wrong in 10 days! That boat is tough, don't worry about it. Stainless fasteners are fine, tef-gel is good stuff. The expanding rubber transom plugs are available with SS hardware which will do better than the brass. Would recommend swapping the zinc anode for an aluminum anode.

I concur with Kevin, from what can be seen in this latest round of photos, this boat will never be safe to use. The metal is done. Suggest you stop now and redirect your energies.

Wet would work, I've used them. you can also pickup a hand held blaster to shoot dry but you need a good sized compressor to power one of those.

Re: Hello.. new member and need assistance

Pitting under flotation foam is typically caused by the trapped moisture in contact with the hull becoming anaerobic (lacking oxygen) and providing an environment conducive to a form of bacteria that produces an acid that eats the metal, a process sometimes referred to as biocorrosion. To save your ...

Re: Identifying a Boat- Long Shot

There have been so many alloy boat builders here in Seattle over the years that have either gone under, been absorbed by bigger firms or been bought out and renamed that its anybody's guess who might have built that boat. That said, my guess would be Kvichak (now Vigor owned I believe) as they have ...

Re: How serious is this corrosion?

I bottom paint lots of aluminum boats here in the Seattle area. Unless the pitting is quite deep (per Kevin) that is a manageable situation. Primarily, it appears that the boat has never been fitted with proper sacrificial anodes. The one anode I see on the transom looks like it is made out of zinc ...

Re: Corrosion resistance products

You can't overprotect with aluminum anodes, put on as many as you want with no harm done but putting on more than you need is pointless. Overprotection occurs when there is a major difference in galvanic potential between the anode and what you want to protect keeping in mind that the conductivity o...

Re: Anode zinc magnesium or aluminum ?

Anodes are meant to be sacrificial but that one didn't get the memo! Zinc anodes don't do a very good job protecting aluminum boats, there isn't enough difference in the galvanic potential between a zinc anode and typical marine plate alloy so the zinc doesn't respond, particularly when they get old...
