Re: New member. Need help on sanding a hull
Philippe, media blasting can create a uniform appearance very quickly but most products are gritty and will leave the surface profiled (resembling sandpaper in roughness). If you can find a blasting contractor that offers a process called sponge blasting they have a media that can put a dull satin t...

I'd switch over to aluminum anodes and call it good. How'd you end up with an Edwing bowpicker way back there? Outdrives?

Re: Anyone knowledgeable in concrete removal?
That is a neat device. Only thing I can think of is to use concrete anchor bolts. drill holes, pound them in, thread on a lift ring and lift out with a forklift. 18" thick slab is scary heavy per sq ft, have to find pretty strong anchors. you could sell them with the rings for mooring ball anch...

Re: Zinc Chromate Primer
Couple of questions . . . Are you experiencing any corrosion or pitting on your hull that has you concerned? If yes, is it a recent problem? Are you using a zinc hull anode? Do you ever plug into shore power? Is the anode on your engine getting used up rapidly?

Crozier might be a good fit, they do semi-custom walk around sleeper cabins with beach access doors

Re: Corrosion on anode
That's the right anode, looks like it lost its connection to the hull. Clean it to bright metal, clean the mount hardware & clean the mount location. Make sure everything is tight when you put it back on.

Re: How to repair areas of corrosion & electrolysis
Well electrolysis is far to serious a malady to describe anything you have got going there. After 40 years not surprising to have a few spots of corrosion from some ownership issues. Any of these areas actual below waterline hull plating or just inner structure?

Re: Corrosion on anode
Agree with Kevin, typical flat stock won’t be reactive enough to work properly. Get 6x6 alum anode plates from boatzincs.com just drill holes they have the right alloy specs and won’t get that growth

Re: Corrosion on anode
Well it certainly needs to be removed and cleaned (acid dipped or sand blasted) to see its true condition and to evaluate why it is not performing properly. If it is zinc (and it looks like it probably is) toss it and replace it with an aluminum anode. Is the outboard anode wasting away kind of rapi...

Re: Garden hose spray nozzle-
The problem with most of them is the handles snap off easily if you drop them or if you hook them on something and jerk on the hose they break. This one I found at home depot and it has a thumb actuated lever that doesn't get caught on anything, so far so good, it's pretty tough. orbit-nozzles-wands...

Clean it with whatever you like, can't hurt it. Depends on type of growth you get but typically dawn detergent with a shot of bleach works good. If you get hard scale then try Mary Kate On-Off acidic cleaner (don't mix that with anything other than water)

Re: 26’ Cat or 28’Monohull
The roll and ride are not similar, cats don't roll which is nice but they also lean out in turns which I didn't care for in the 27 cat I once owned. The mono will have more storage space and more useable interior space than the cat which would be more practical for cruising. The cat will be very man...

A member here, Goatram, does quite a bit of welding (mods and repairs) on fully equipped boats and likely has some thoughts on this. On the occasions I have had hot work done on mine I pull the CPU off the engine, disconnect all cables from the batteries and ensure all breakers are off on the panel....

Re: Sandblast on a 16' Alumaweld hull- thoughts on restoration
I work on Safe Boats, I can't say I've ever seen anything on them yet that has been powder coated. The topsides are typically bare with some vinyl graphics, the collars are hard foam coated with polyurea and the bottoms are epoxy overcoated with bottom paint. What are they powder coating?

Re: Sandblast on a 16' Alumaweld hull- thoughts on restoration
Couldn't agree more when talking difference between blasting and chemical etch for any type of coating on aluminum however the video test procedure doesn't take into account the effects of time and exposure to UV and moisture that eventually takes its toll on the typical powder coat bond.

Re: Sandblast on a 16' Alumaweld hull- thoughts on restoration
For what it's worth I get quite a few fibrglass boats in for bottom painting that have powder coated aluminum engine pods that show coating failure (peeling). I don't think powder adheres very well to aluminum, particularly in a moist or submerged application. IMO its an oversold technology, either ...
