Re: Comparing Hulls
Mark, here is a 'draft level' image of four of sixteen different pump/pipe/flow runs similar to this set. There's lots to model, more to design and plenty to write spec.s for and to find suppliers, catalog numbers (most have 2 dozen figures in the #) and make sure the features of the controls, pumps...

Re: Corrosion under flooring on Alumaweld Intruder?
giddy, there's only two ways to clean ; blast or paint stripper followed by acid etch, sanding will only work (acceptably) on outside flat surfaces. Sanding will leave coatings in the inner corners where the tool can't clean well. Sprayed chemicals will reach these locations. Not sure you're reading...

Re: Comparing Hulls
Mark, I took on a design project a few months ago, (Thanksgiving or so) and I've been covered getting it ready to go. I'll be back in a month or two when I sell this project's output and resume our Shape vs Movement discussion. In the meantime; my drawing time is all going for this industrial design...

Re: Corrosion under flooring on Alumaweld Intruder?
giddy, first its always good to cover the course already charted here, it sounds like you've done some research but take time to read what we've all posted thoroughly. Then most of your questions will be answered. Corrosion of aluminum is of two main types galvanic and crevice/poultice; in the first...

Re: PACIFIC BOAT ISSUE? BOAT US SAYS YES?
No one has mentioned the obvious? No other boat, not even many other welded aluminum boats, could be left in the Pacific surf to pound on the beach for a day or so and even float again! This is only possible with a welded aluminum skiff! Then to have problems because of the failure or #1 the origina...

Re: The Journey Begins:framing supports
John, sorry my sarcasm was't obvious. I think the cabin top framing is very adequate , perhaps a bit overdone? I'd say 2" frames on 1' centers is WAY good enough. I've built cabin tops with a curve, where I only put flat bars FLAT to the roof panel, and they were fine, yours is 20x fine for str...

The Journey Begins:Framing Adequate??(!)
John, do you think the cabin top framing will hold up? I mean, since you'll be holding square dance parties up there, is it really going to be stiff enough?
I'm concerned it will only hold about 400 to 600 lb. per square foot, but is that enough?
cheers,
Kevin Morin

Re: Strengthening Bars, Advice Wanted?
Katoh, if 6061 is that rare, then braking the sheet is the way to go. It's best all around to have the 5086/83 below the waterline anyway, we're (Yanks) all just in the habit of using extrusions because they're fairly widely available- and can be ordered nearly exactly in the dimensions we'd like to...

Re: Strengthening Bars, Advice Wanted?
Katoh, don't use flat bars; if they stay flat to the hull there is no real stiffening' and leave a potential for crevice/poultice corrosion even on trailer; little gain if 'on edge' as they will bend over on rollers and beaching, grounding and they are not self supporting. Solid bars are not worth t...

Re: New project at work:grounding vs bonding
Chtucker, that sounds like the work is being done just right. Both AC and DC should have the two wire system, to and from all loads from the power source/distribution panels and returning. Then, in one single location both systems should be BONDED to the hull so there is no potential between either ...

The flat bottom, simplest shape boat shown, balanced, at rest with no thrust to push this particular 'hole in the water' forward, to the left and to the right that same hull as the engine thrust is added to push forward. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/Hull%20Lines/lift_3_1...

Comparing Hulls: beginning to plane
I'm not sure where this post went yesterday but I'll repost this and see how we do? this introduces a series of images and ideas dealing with planing a very simply jon boat shape. My reasoning to begin with a jon boat is t keep the geometry as simple as possible before adding V, reverse chines, and ...

19 ft cuddy
CAT, when the chines, keel and sheer are resolved into 'plates' if they can be 'developed' then the surfaces will 'unwrap' into flat outlines that can be made into a boat hull shape. But since there are an infinite number of curves in all three axis, therefore an infinite number of shapes that could...

Re: 19 ft cuddy
CAT, NX 7 is pretty high end to use for a skiff, (!) so not being familiar with that application (suite of applications?) are there marine design routines? It sure is handy to be able to find CG, CB, Lateral plane, waterplane area and all the design coefficients of a hull while you're editing the su...

CAT, I did a post on a recent one-off skiff here: http://aluminumalloyboats.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=4143 of course, it's not the only way to build but does show the tack-up and build sequence I used. http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/kevinmorin_photo/work%20methods/aftbuildingjig_6a.jpg ...

Re: 19 ft cuddy
Chaps, I don't advocate the use of slotted extrusions where one side is left un-welded because the expense of a decent weld is too high for the boat's market targets.... I can't excuse anyone that builds in a crevice/poultice cell in the design. yes, I agree that the extruded chine or keel shapes of...

Re: 19 ft cuddy
Tom, CAT, Chaps, the VKB (vertical keel bar) is only one way of building a skiff, not the only way. They can be free floating, like the one shown, with the bottom halves tacked up to it by holding the stern 2/3 straight while tacking the after centerline then tacking equally spaced and evenly up the...

Capt PJ, I hope this lubber's question isn't too embarrassing? Does Port and Starboard swap as you move from wheel house to wheel house and swap ends of the ship? Re: Comparing Hulls
Mark, its not an instantly obvious idea, so spending time getting this concept is normal, I'm not sure I've got a handle on it! The main event is how hard water is? So the force (adhesion) holding the 'chains'/molecules/droplets together is what gives the primary resistance to 'parting' or separatin...

Lincoln vs Miller
goatram, I not arguing to put the Miller MIG away! I think Miller's idea of simplifying controls, making more generalized features and therefore making things easier to use than Lincoln's 350MP; is a good idea. Lets face it, most of us could get by word processing on the forum- this little processor...

Re: Welding machine help?
goatram, gandrfab, chaps, it's not welding we're discussing; we're discussing a welding 'machine' see the header. Welding has little to do with the issue, in fact; its not involved . We're discussing getting this power supply READY to weld. Welding is moving the torch WHEN the power supply is set; t...

MP350 Power MIG by Lincoln Electric
gandrfab, the power supply discussion can be long because this machine, as provided by Lincoln has #1 a few headaches, #2 some of them had factory defects #3 Lincoln won't support the MK Python supplied, originally, this power supply and #4 tuning the wire feed and the controls is not very similar t...
