You could try dumping a little RV antifreeze down the scupper to displace the water.

Re: What to use to get the scuffs out?
Welcome Bob,
I'm not a Pacific 'Skiff guy ,but don't they use some sort of coating on the surface. I'd give Jay a quick call.. A few nicks and scuffs tell the non alloy boats to stay away.

I'd remove the both battery cables. Just did some welding on a big ferry with new electronic Cat's .They claim that you will fry the computer if you weld on the boat with the battery connected. Why take the chance .

Re: Welding machines...............
John is right about the pulse aluminum welding. You could look for a used Miller xmt and add a optima pulse pendent and spool gun. Your really going to want a TIG machine for the small stuff and the fuel tanks. New inverter technology is the way to go but expense when the wife is looking at the tool...

Re: Which alloy to use
6061 is fine , 5086 doesn't machine well. I'm sure some one will have a different opinion . If your looking in the drop pile make sure its not 7000 series.

Re: Pipe bender
Try getting a quote on 6063 pipe. Its fine for hand rails and thing above the waterline. By a sheet of 5052 and cut the strips that you need from it. Some time you can buy a drop off from a whole sheet. Generally 5052 is good for most things except for the hull Last boat that Yarde Metals cut for us...

boat show display
Beside building boats ,we'll build just about anything out of aluminum. What better than a boat that doesn't have to float. All the pieces of the display except the helm are made of aluminum. The customer wanted a boat transom for a desk. We built the parts and painted everything white . New York Ma...

watertight hatch
We needed a cheaper way to access watertight compartments on the 24'' oil clean up boat we are building. We took a chunk of 5 x 8 tube and cut an o-ring groove in the lathe. We then made a jig to drill the holes in the cover and back ring. Tthe cover and the hole in the deck 7" so that you have...

This fabrication stuff is like drugs, once you start you have to spend more and more to get the same high. Next you'll need a mig set-up ,them pulse mig. 24' oil clean up boat
Just started building a 24' blunt nose center console designed by Bill Lincoln at Response Marine. The console will be pushed to one side to allow oil boom to be stacked on deck and deployed. The bottom is 5086 .250 with .190 sides and deck. Power is going to be a single 150 Honda. The boat is tacke...

Re: 5086 or?
5086 is stronger in the as welded condition. 5052 and 5086 have the same basic corrision reseisent properrties. 1/4" 5086 is way overkill for a storage box. For the rod holders look for some 6061 tube. We use 2 x 1/8" tube. In the bottom of the tube we drill a 1/4" hole thru the ce...

Re: So I want to build
I admirer your ambition, you have a few hurdles to over come. First you have to learn how to weld and not just a few pieces together on a bench. Although possible to Mig, you may want to consider TIG welding the tank. You will need some help handling the big sheets of aluminum (A bottom plate could ...
