Hike welded Aluminum boat

#1

Post by Butch »

I just bought a Hike 24 with a 9 ft beam. It has two Volvo AD31P-A 150 HP diesels. The motors have 210 hrs. on them. The boat is in very good condition. What is the feed back on this make of boat?

Welcome! I'd not heard of Hike boats but found their website http://www.hikemetal.com/projects.htm and they look like serious commercial grade craft. Congratulations on your purchase! How about putting up a couple of pics?

Nice to have another alloy fanatic aboard... Uh, just to clue you in... it's considered "proper manners" to post a pic or five of your new boat. I'll take one of their self - righting S.A.R. boats.

For some reason I even received an emailed redALERT about this boat.

That boat screams........."Hey YOU....jus' try and fall outa me", with all those railings!!

I'll assume it wasn't used for light tackle Marlin fishing. But maybe an All Star "cage match" between Andre the giant and the Hulkster? They look really tall?

The railings come in handy in rough water if you have to get to the bow, being a ex police boat, came in handy when docking beside a stranded boat in unstable seas. She is a work boat, nothing fancy, everything functional. Perfect for what I use her for.

We are always hauling lumber to our Island camp. Will come in handy. I thought at first it would be good to load ATV, but with engine guard on stern could not get real close to dock to load. I like the fact that the engine cover sits low and can still put a good load of stuff on top with out it going overboard. When going to camp it is always loaded.I only made one trip over to camp last fall. It is a twenty three mile crossing of open water. It can get real rough out there at times. Will be interesting to see how much diesel it will burn. I will have a good idea next spring,, after a few crossings.

Hi Guys!
Well it has been a year since I got the Hike Boat. It is everything that you would want in a boat and more. Very seviceable, not fancy. The two Volvo 150 HP diesels sure work well. Lots of power. Will move out at about 40 MPH top speed. Cruise at 35. The best part is the fuel. I travel 46 miles return to my camp and burn 60 Liters that is about 15 US gallons.

Best Regards to all

Very cool boat you have there Butch  I look forward to seeing more post about your craft and adventures you have in her. Over 3 miles to the gallon is a awesome burn rate.

Not often we get some Great Lake Alloy boater's posting up. I sure do have a lot of questions about the area, boating and outdoor activities involving aluminum.

I am located in the North Channel just north of Lake Huron. I keep the Hike in Thessalon, Ontario. We travel to Cockburn Island to our camp. Cockburn is between Manitulin and Detour Islands. The north Channel can get real nasty weather. We have a few Stanley aluminum boats in the area. They are made in Perry Sound Ontario. Good sturdy boat. Hike Mfg. just make commercial Alloy boats. They have a good name in the industry.

Thanks for the reply, You keep dry and safe....... looks like some nasty weather already there and more on the way. Is your camp private or more of a commercial endeavor????

Do you hunt and fish???? We always like those type of pictures too.

Your battle ship sure does look stout ready to take on everything and anything.

More picture please

I bet you could make the ramp work by building and extension like the folding bridges the Army uses and then just keep her in reverse against the dock while loading, of course use lines as well to hold her in place.

That is a really nice strudy boat? Did you pick her up at an auction or what? OH YEAH! Welcome to the AAB fold! Capt PJ

Camp is private, do some fishing, Lots of history on the island. Check this site out and will give you more info.

http://googlesightseeing.com/2006/08/co ... land-week/

The idea of building ramp to load from stern sounds good. The Hike replaced my 28 ft steel boom tug , powered by a 371 detroit diesel. Speed only 7 mph. Check out these pictures, look to right on site for folders on old island pictures
and tug. http://s1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc476/tolsmabay/

Looks like you have a piece of heaven carved out  Love seeing the history of property. The dedication of one man , building the fire tower by hand. Maintaining the airport. Looks like there was a apple orchard growing at one time.

I look forward to seeing posts of a great find that your boat is. The adventures you have with it. In other threads in the future.

Oh by the way Welcome to AAB.
