Hello I Just Bought 27' of Scrap Aluminum

Post by TheGimpCB »

Hello All,

I am so glad I found this sight. I have learned so much already. I currently live in Maryland and will be moving to the
Tampa bay area in a few months. I have owned many boats both power and sail but never an aluminum plate boat.
So I guy I know puts me on to this boat he says its a project and I can pick it up for what the owner would get for scrap.
Well I asked for pictures and long story short I am now the new owner of a 27' aluminum project boat. Seeing the things you guys have done with your boats I see huge potential in my project. From the story I have been told the boat was built in the late 50's. It had a inboard then it was converted to inboard/outboard and some time in the early 90's some one hung twin Johnson 150's on her. Both of them are junk My plans are to strip the motors off of her build a proper outboard bracket with a swim platform put a new fuel tank in her and the list goes on anyways im getting ahead of my self. I really enjoy reading about your boats and look forward to the adventure of owning an aluminum alloy boat.

Soon the project will begin...

Gimp, WELCOME to AAB

Do you know anything about the hull, like who built it or what type of Alloy did they use?
Is the bottom in good shape, is there pitting ?
If the hull is in good shape you have lots of possibilities with her.

I know that trailer is over kill I had to buy six used tires just to move the boat. On top of the beer I owe my buddy who dragged it to his storage yard. Oh the joys of boat ownership

My journey started with 6 new tires before I left Clarkston WA. The trailer had 6 auto tires on it that had seen better days. Then new disk brakes, Electric over hydraulic actuator, upon installation found I needed to replace the Axles cause they were only 3500lb not the 6000lb required to maintain the 18000lb capacity rating. Boat finished weights 10500lbs. The trailer is 3300lb by itself.

Building it will be expensive. The Hull Truth and CL can be your source for good parts :deadhorse:

I think I have read your build three times I only have one problem with what you have done and that's I want to do a lot of that to this boat. Really your build has been an inspiration. lets hope when I get to see what I have got myself into I don't have to much trailer work.
