Massachusetts Spring Salmon

#1

Post by Illgotoo »

Finally managed some quality time with my Stabicraft. During my latest trip home I caught a nice 5 1/2 lb male landlocked [Atlantic] salmon on the Quabbin Reservoir. They're right on top this time of year.

What color is the meat before cooking ?
What's the bag limit on those critters?

Lester: They're red (or more accurately: "salmon" :) ) colored. Just like ocean salmon. And you're allowed two per person.

Not large by Alaska or PNW standards, but around here anything over four pounds is a good fish.

Nice....any salmon is a good salmon, when they're not wrapped in celiphane. In my book.

Nice, how do you deal with the HP restrictions of the Quabbin?

Alloy: Trolling live bait.

WRT inspections, the state is concerned that zebra mussels get into the water supply and clog up the pipes. So boat and trailer must be washed by certified boat washer. Bunk trailers with felt are a no-no so I had to change the bunks also. Once that's done you're in. As long as you only use the boat in the Quabbin. The authorities attach a cable and clip (like the electric meters have) to the trailer and boat winch eye. Then they can tell that the boat has not been put in somewhere else (where there might be zebra mussels).

MacCTD: There's no way around the motor restrictions. Max 4S motor is 25HP which is what I have. I use a Yamaha high thrust outboard that works well with my 15' Stabicraft. It makes about 20 knots. With the high thrust motor you sacrifice rpms for torque. It also has a large prop. But high rpms couldn't push that size boat well with only 25HP anyway so it works out okay.

Massachusetts loves to have rules and restrictions.
