Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
Why not just get an avet jx?
Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
wanting to jig with heavy jigs in deep water
I wanted the star drag so I can crank it down and fish for grouper , use braided line and crank em off the bottom and try to keep them from getting back in the reef
Do you think the JX would be just as good ?

Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
There's not much difference, only that the avet is $100 more and has a level drag not a star drag. Best advantage of a level drag is the control of strike and full drag settings. I've never used the Avet jx, but a lot of people out there like avet's.
I think Capt G uses Avet's. ??!!?? I might be wrong too.

Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
I havn't ever used either one, but AlanTani posted on BD that the Penn Baja had an edge over the JX due to the drag
Maybe I should look at some of those Newells that have 35 lb drag ?
I guess the best way to learn this stuff is by experience, cuz I been wearing my brain out trying to find the reel I really need
that fits my price range.......on the internet

Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
Nat, buying things is always about $$. Just because you don't have the best reel out there doesn't mean you can't do it. It just means you have to change your tactics on how you do it and get it done.
Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
actually, I am wanting to setup a new rig for jigging deep water 250' to 350' with 16 -20 oz jigs for grouper
I don't have a setup now that can get the job done, my torim with 65 lb PP that I use for jigging in 60' to 120' water is too light for what I'm hoping to tangle with. 50lb + Grouper and Amberjack .......could also use it for livebait
Maybe I should put some 100 power pro on my spheros 1400 FA and jig with an 8' stiff cobia rod

Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
Nat , start with some 113's or 114's on a cheap 80lb to 120lb rods. The LEVER DRAG reel is nice though because in one quick movement you are set on kill .
It's what you learn with and get used too but you don't have to buy a $1000.00 reel to fish the way we do .
When I was out West [till 94], the party boats all had Penn 113's for boat rods [ Rentals ] and those people hammered those reels.
Cabella's had the 113 for like $115.00 last time I looked.

Hey Welder, thanks for the link
They show the reel listed, but when you click on the item
it shows out of stock, no longer available
Penn is going to do a special run on these this summer some time ?

Re: WTB Penn 113HN Baja Special
Looks like there's still a "following" for the Penns, for bottom fisherman mostly??
50+ pound Grouper....wow. They still have them there? not here......oh yeah, thats the Gulf. Everythings better in the Gulf.
I know that.
When ya get one make sure ya post a photo, the fish I mean, not the reel.
I heard something about the baja reel going away and replaced with something else, one time - the torque?
I wouldn't think a Avet is any better than a Penn, maybe lighter. Drag wise probably the same.
I'm surprised how low the drag poundage is on a large Avet.
Do deep ""jiggers"" want some drag? I'd think so...since the tackle is usually lighter than "meat sticking"
AGAIN.......twice in one week this is posted. Just a great fish picture because of the fella's "look".
in shallower water (off Tampa) but still...that guys "posture" is unique to say the least.
The fish Pic was too L-O-N-G for this forum (???), but his Gag was BIG.
An ole trick is to take the Penn drag apart and take the metal "stamped steel" washers and sand them over emory cloth really good till all edges are completely rounded and have no square'ness or sharpness and then they'll be slicker and not jerk.
But then again, if your after a 50 pound copper belly you'll want to ball peen that entire star down as hard as it can go and then dunk the reel in the ocean many times to make sure it never moves, again.
My ole grouper digging reels (Daiwa Sealines, I believe are way better) the drags were all frozen!
