Yanmar 370hp Block Heater?

#1

Post by amfboats »

Hi Guys

Looking for a point in the right direction, we are building this AMF QRV 750 Jet RIB for a NZ Coastguard Unit and they would like a block heater for this 370hp Yanmar diesel engine, They are beach launching straight in to surf and would like to be able to put the pedal to metal straight away when responding to a call. I haven't had much luck finding anything in New Zealand that is suitable, and thought maybe some of our friends on here boating the cooler climates might be able to help.

Here are a few photos for the photo junkies.

This 7.5mtr (24.6 feet) AMF is running a Hamiton 241 Jet Unit, has 8mm (8 millimeter = 0.314 inch) hull plates and as with all of our QRV Models the tubes are up high and well clear of the water.

In one of the photos you can see the boat sitting on the custom beach launching trailer. The draw bar is removable and allows the boat to be drivin on the trailer then the draw bar is removed and put on the transom end of the trailer so the boat can be backed into the surf and drive straight off the trailer bow first, now doubt showing the tractor driver in salt water:-) then the draw bar is folded up so it can fit in the shed.

Yanmar doesn't offer one as an option?

I don't know if this will help you but the 5.9L Cummins motors come with block heaters.
It might be possible to adapt to the Yanmar?

Hi Scott

Thanks for that.

Yanmar more than likely do have a standard product but the NZ Distributor hasn't been asked for one before.

After putting this post up I found http://www.mackboring.com/RecreationalM ... ories.aspx site with block heaters for Yanmar engines and have emailed them asking for more info but I haven't heard back yet. pg 22 of the engine accessory pdf.

I don't know anything about that particular Yanmar but the 6LP (315hp) does not have a block heater either. What it does have is a fuel heater which is similar. It warms the fuel until the engine gets to temp. Start it up and go. If you have volt gage in the dash you'll see the draw on the system. It will run at 10v or so. Once the heater is off then the gage will show 13-14v. Might check to see if it's got the heater.

Just as a side note there are jetboats around here that use the 6LP in front of a HJ241in 24 to 25' boats (7-8K pounds). Not a speed demon but will still climb class 4 rapids with ease.

Nice looking ride. hope you post some pics when it's done.

Kat's makes a variety of block heaters, I could not find a website for them but I found this site that listed their products. http://www.warehouseautoparts.com/Speci ... ecials.htm
I have several large diesel generators, 100KW and 200KW, that go from off to full load in 5 to 10 seconds, they use heaters that heat the coolant through a radiator hose not a actual block heater that attaches to the block or to the oil pan.

How about something like this: http://www.espar.com/html/products/hydronic5.html
It hooks into the engines cooling system I believe. I talked with a guy via e-mail that was going to use it with his yanmar for this very reason. It will also heat the cabin. I did not save our correspondence, but could get in touch with him again. Espar products are utilized a lot on the big rigs up here in AK. I have an Espar D4 in my boat and it has been very reliable.
Spending my kids inheritance with them, one adventure at a time.
