going to try an ETEC

#1

Post by capeannfisherman »

My 1991 Johnson 20 on my 1980 16' loanstar is finally going to be replaced. The 20 still starts every time and runs all day with never a problem, but I'm going to be a little kinder to the environment and try the new ETEC25. Use this mostly on the lake I live on and some trips to the Quabbin. I'm gambling the Quabbin will accept the new ETECs, they need 2 more signatures to be approved. I'll update on performance reliability etc. later.

I'm sure I'm not alone, not knowing what this means?

Good luck with it.

You probably know this but make sure your Loanstar is rated for at least 50hp or you cannot use it with a 25hp on the Quabbin. The rules are 25hp max as long as it is no more than 50% max for the boat.

Jetty,

Just so you can understand what we are talking about. http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/central/quabbin.htm

Outboard Motor Size Limits

TWO-STROKE ENGINES - Private boats with two-stroke engines are limited to one-half the Boating Industries of America (BIA) or Outboard Boating Council (OBC) hp rating of the boat up to a maximum of 20 hp.
FOUR-STROKE ENGINES - Private boats with four-stroke engines are limited to one-half the Boating Industries of America (BIA) or Outboard Boating Council (OBC) hp rating of the boat up to a maximum of 25 hp.
Private boats may use two motors provided the total combined horsepower does not exceed the horsepower limits above.
Combined four-stroke and two-stroke engines may not exceed 20 hp total.
25 horsepower two-stroke motors are not allowed.

I did not know they capped the 2 strokes at 20hp, I cannot use my 16' Duranautic on the lake because it is rated for a max of 40hp and my motor is a 25hp Yamaha 4 stroke.
What kind of price are you looking at? A local place quoted me around $2800 for a 25hp 20" shaft Etec, no electric start, tiller steering.

Wow, that is crazy money for a 25hp motor.

Mac,

Do they really check if it likes normal to them? or do they check every boat, engine and rating card?

they usually check boats the first few days, after the first week things really slow down. But if they see someone going across the lake at higher then normal speed they will come check you out. So you can probably get away with your 25 just don't open it up.

Not yet, I drive by every day to see if my boat has moved. You think for that kind of money for a 25hp I would get some service. My boat actually got deeper in the line of boats waiting for work.

New ETEC has been installed. A great little motor. Faster then the 30 Johnson I had on there before and seems to have much more torque. It's able to puss me and my big fishing buddy right along. I will have to get a GPS on board to measure the speed, but it seems like we are going close to 30.
