Gid day all

what motors do you guys run? on size of boat also?

i have a 21f with a 225 Verado, love to have a 300hp on the back of it thou
:D .............i like the new Suzuki also, all good reports on these motors downunder

Unbeleivable, Back in the two stroke days, Suzuki's were such pieces of crap....I can say that because I owned on of those mis-engineered heaps of aluminuim.

I won't go into the costly why's and hows, of why my motor and 10,000 other ones all had the same problems.

But what happened? Here's what I think they did.

Fired a bunch of engineers, first.

Bought the possible competition, a Honda, and then did their own thing with it.

The turn around is noteworthy, ever since they went all 4-stroke. Or at least the jury is still out on that, not sure.

I could have gone Suzuki and saved some dollars even, but since I had a 2 stroker, I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth just yet.

Looks like everyone who has one is satisfied, and thats all that matters.

I have a 225 Honda, it's my first. Always had Evinrudes, and Yamaha's, and it's my first 4 stroke.

I think possibily there should be a new saying; "Once ya go alloy and 4 stroke, you'll never go back...to F'glass and 2-stroke".

Although, some of us did meet a guy on another forum that did have a BlackLab 23 plate alloy, and sold it to run and old F'glass boat instead.

And something must have been really wrong, to use the excuse, "my joints couldn't take the ride of the alloy boat", things that make you say Hmmmmmm.

I put a Suzuki DF 140 ( 4 stroke) on a 20'3" Plate Alloy C/C from BlackLab . its very economcal to run .squeezes the fuel . but sometimes I crave more juice .The max hp rate for that hull was 140 but now is 150 .but in real life it can take anything you can afford to hang on it . The manufacturer has rated the hull for recreational use . if you tell them it will be used commercialy power is unlimited and waranty is limited . if I was to do it over I'd buy more power 200 -225 just for giggles .

I had a 2300lb dry, "non alloy" boat with the Suzuki 140 and it performed flawlessly. I put 300 a hours on it in 06 and another 200 in 07 and it never skipped a beat. I was able to get 4mpg and even running a touch under WOT, it would get over 3mpg. It was a bit under powered if i had more than 4 people on board, but i am sold on Suzuki. My next boat will be build around their DF300.

IMO,
My girl is 14,000lbs fully loaded for a canyon trip with my Volvo 310hp D6 diesel & I/O Duo Prop she runs 25-knots at 15-16GPH.

What single outboard could do that????? let alone at the GPH or the speed and overall length of time a diesel will last.

If you need speed and you got weight, then a Diesel coupled to a I/O, Inboard or better yet Jetdrive gives you, less maintenace, less fuel cost, greater range, less costly fuel, and you like dependability...then GO.....DIESEL!

I have a 90 Honda on a 1925 Pacific. I crave more HP, but the motor trolls at the perfect speed for salmon so I'm going to leave it alone. When it comes time to re-power, it will be with a Honda 150. It will be scary fast for the Alaskan ocean.

This lil boat is so damn sweet. If I had this thing with a seat up front on the bow deck and a trolling motor, it would make one wicked Inshore Bay Boat for creek and backwater fishing, and get there FAST!

At 25 knotts in my boat 23 pacific with the Honda 225 OB I get right a 5MPG so thats what about 5-6 GPH as far as total hours on these Hondas ,well, the coasties are go over 10,000 hours .

I hope I get that close. :D

ok i have a mercury 115 saltwater model 2 stroke. uses bugger all gas
and is more than enough power for my boat :) i think to much lol ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. who was that masked alloy fisherman!!!!

Twin CR Yamaha F115 on V2325. Would have loved twin 150's, but that whole recreational thing... Tops out 48 mph, averages 2.5 to 3.0 mpg overall. Will plane with 1 motor if weight is shifted around. Twins make mauevering these boats pretty easy when docking in a siff wind.

wreckfisher Q: how does the transom hold up with so much weigh on it with the twin engines on it? is the transom reinforced to take the weight?
i've seen boats with 3 or 4 engines on and lordy lordy talk about the weigh hanging on the arse end of a boat.

The 2325 could handle a pair of 225's but the insrance companies would freak out.

Lets just say it doesn't need a transom saver. :wink:

It's not how much horsepower you hang out the back that matters. Its how much iron your transom was designed to hang out back :) (i.e. how much weight can that transom take).

John , I'm sorry I was thinking of my Honda BF225's , 593lbs each dry weight.

but I would rather have the single with a 10 HP kicker. :wink:

Les don't ever be sorry bro :D . I was just saying that HP rating is one thing but folks should look at transom ratings as well (i.e how much weight can you hang off the back)

hmmm talk about anchors at both end's lol 400kg's plus on the arse is a lota weight just for xtra horse power. but hey if it can handle it then why not :)

I run max hp on my 22ft Stabi...........its a 2004 BF 200hp Honda........very sweet, great economy, quiet, reliable......and its enough power to get this boat up to 48 mph........

That 21ft you have with a 225 Verado should have kick butt power??
Verado's are at the top of the Power list?? Power not just meaning HP....

The best advice I've heard on engines is narrow down your selection.
Like:
1. Yahami
2. Honda
3. Suzuki

Then buy the engine brand and model that has the best engine support/price in your city...............any one of these great engines can be taken out by poor maint or a failure to fix issues correctly..........and ALL
engines have their own issues.....

I am also with Ironwoodtuna.........damn thats a mean machine!

Am converting my WHOLE fleet of vehicles to diesel, Have 1 ton 96 Dodge
Cummins, 98 VW TDI Beetle, 97 VW TDI Passat.

The VW TDI is a 1.9 L engine and the Europeanians are putting over 200hp in these guys! Honda/BMW/VW/MB will all have HOT new clean
diesels in the US this year!

I think it was Jetty talkin about that old diesel outboard...how heavy, etc
But I bet ...............Super Dave's HUGE Halibut..........that within 2-3 years
you will start to see KILLER Diesel OUTBOARDS!

Hi Guys
Getting a 24 ft Commuter boat built. The power for the boat is the one thing that I am having trouble choosing. Looking at a 300 hp to power my new baby. Could fellow boaters that have either the Evinrude E-TECH or the Mercury Verado give me their feedback.
For long term reliability less parts less to go wrong E-TECH, vs newest technology is the VERADO.
Which one to choose..........

Boat is ready in two weeks, and I chose the 300 HP Verado.
The Verado Club has tons of info and some very knowledgeable people.
Wondering if anyone has used shark hide on their boats?

It is supposed to give the aluminium a coating that will keep it from dulling.

Hi All !

Work on all types 2strokes and 4 strokes. I agree that 4 strokes are the way to go hands down. We will have to see how the EPA screw things up in the near

future with them (CC converters ) but either way the tech from the auto industry helped the outboard leap ahead rapidly. I know the complexity seems to be

alot but believe me them OHC designs have had the living crap beat out of them to the point of failure and taken back to the drawing board and designed

even better ! I would say you could take your pick now with any of the big three Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and with good TLC care you would be set for a good

while. Just be aware of how easy it is to get service for the particular make in your area :thumbsup:
