Protecting Motor While Welding
Protecting Motor While Welding
In the past while doing any welding on my boat I have always tried to put the ground clamp as close to the place I am welding as possible, making sure that the motor is not between the two. My fear has been that the current from the welder will damage the electronics in my outboard. Am I correct in my thinking? Is there something else that I should also do like disconnect the positive lead from the battery or am I worrying for no reason?
Re: Protecting Motor While Welding
I'd remove the both battery cables. Just did some welding on a big ferry with new electronic Cat's .They claim that you will fry the computer if you weld on the boat with the battery connected. Why take the chance .

Re: Protecting Motor While Welding
I removed both battery cables and removed the wires to the Electronics as well. Tomorrow I will launch her and see if she's still good to go.
