Inexpensive trolling gear thoughts?

#1

Post by S L Dave »

I am going to buy a 80lb stand up combo for trolling and am looking for some ideas.

If I am lucky, this setup will see one fish a year.
Therefore...
I am looking to keep the spending down to a minimum and and am not interested in what is the absolute best gear...just some thoughts on some decent rods and reels. Maybe slightly more $$ than a Penn Senator and an Ugly Stick. (FYI, before any wisecracks...my current 50lb setup is a 25 year old Penn Senator and an Ugly Stick :) And it has been a great setup for me...so it is possible that I may go that route again. )

Thanks guys for any thoughts.

Dave.....

Why not stick with Penn....go with the Penn 113hn 'Baja Special', you can pick up for $159.........

Then try one of those Roberts (Acid) Wrap Sticks, Mojo showed us!
The physics of this wrap sounds very effective.....

An 80 lb combo needs to produce about 30 lbs of drag and a 113 or 116 will not get there..

In this case I would recommend an Avet 30W Pro and a shakesphere tidewater big water U. Stick, 5'6" XXH, with all aftco rollers.

Beautiful reel Jeff...but doesn't really fit into the inexpensive part of the equation. My local shop has(Charkbait) has them for $470. :(

rod and reel

Hi Dave,

Have seen some xxh and xxxh graphighters with wind on guides for $240 I think this past week on bloodydecks. Great for troll or standup if still available. Both Ebay and bloodydecks have occational bargains on penn international or shimano tiagra 2 speeds. Still that kind of combo will put you in the $500 range. Try to find one loaded with spectra to save another $50 or so.

Can find good 6/0 senetors for under $100. Couple that with an older glass trolling rod from calstar or seeker and that is the bargain outfit. Just pray you don't hook a monster because they will hurt you with the less capable rod, weaker drag and single gear ratio

Good problem to have.

Tight lines,
Mike

I believe the Avet is about $370 new at Charkbait, and the rod I suggested can be had for around$120 at basspro. Then there is used.

But even the big ol 9/0 will only produce about 24 lbs of drag, so again that doesn't cut it.

There are some swordfish, marlin, makos, and threshers pretty close that I would like to troll for. I haven't caught one ...yet. Heavy gear gives me the option of a quick release if I ever do hook one, that is.

Probably my second largest ever. 50 pound class.

You can see my Accurate 870 and Biscayne rod in the leaning post in the pic. I'll take on any Marlin or Shark with that set up.
I ain't SKEEEERED! Bring it the hell on!

I run the bastards down and beat them on the head, if I have too.

After Tropical Storm Fay and 20" of rain in 2 days. It's gonna be a new world around here from now on.

Tarpon were everywhere!!!! Bustin schools of Mullet, but practically un- catchable. We tried.

Did you find a set-up yet?
From what I've read, I think longranger's advice is best for our waters.

Yes...and thanks all for the advice.
My wife was kind enough to buy me a Classic Seeker with roller guides and a new Special Senator 6/0 for my B-day. The rod outclasses the reel...but still...exactly what I need for now.

That should get the job done for 95% of the fish around here.
...The other 5%??? :?
