Silver Streak 26 bottom job

#1

Post by Chaps »

Working on a very cool boat at the moment, a new 26 Silver Streak built on Vancouver Island and owned by a gentleman here in Washington. The boat will be spending some time in a salt water marina and was in need of a proper anti-foul paint job. I do a five step process: abrasive blast to white metal, acid etch primer, anti-corrosive epoxy primer, barrier coat epoxy primer and ablative bottom paint.

First thing - get it up in the air so it can be worked on!

After masking the waterline its time to dry blast w/crushed glass abrasive (got the kid to help me!)

Apply one thin coat of acid etch primer, this bites into the freshly blasted surface and halts oxidation

Apply 2 full coats of anti-corrosive epoxy, nice color?

Apply 3 full coats of epoxy barrier coat, isolates the hull from moisture and stray electrical currents

Apply 3 full coats of hard ablative bottom paint, keeps the critters off!

Nice job, looks great.
What does the boat have for power, how did you determine the water line?

Yamaha 4 strokes, not on the boat at the moment. Hull had a waterline stain from some recent use and the owner specified a certain height above that. I use a construction laser to strike my mask, comes out very straight.

Very impressive work space and paint system there Chaps. Very clean!!!.

Those cleats must be mighty strong to lift off of them. Did the gunnel flex at all with the strain? Curious as I want to redo the bottom of the Sculpin this winter or early spring.

Great pic's and thanks for sharing this bottom paint system.

Chaps had my NR Seahawk in the air by its transom tiedowns and the nose.
Bob Nice job. I like the new set up you got should be better than the open ground and mud.

Got yerself a "fort" to work under now, I see. Nice addition.

I find how they do those bottom strakes interesting, "V" shaped extrusion and stitched Welded on?

Great How-to

Thanks guys, yeah, I had to put up a fort to work under. Getting held up by all our rain was starting to really cramp my ability to get things done. On a bigger boat like this I can hang a tarp from the shed over the bow and keep going. And yeah, the slab is much nicer to work on than the dirt.

This boat has beefy commercial cleats on heavily welded bases, its the best way to lift alloys. Your Edwing could handle this treatment easily. On my LaConner I grab the rail running around under my gunwale. On plastic boats I have to use straps cause there's typically nothing strong enough to attach chains to although the transom eyes are occasionally mounted strong enough on some boats to use.

Wow that sure turned out nice Chaps. That is exactly what I want to do with the Sculpin. I like the black too. Thanks for the photo how to. I'll be printing this one out for the near future.

Cheers,
John

So you leave Sculpin in the water? I'd be happy to do the job for you if getting it across the border is possible. We have better paint down here.
