Winterize ????

OK, decided to winterize in the 60 degree weather instead of waiting until the first snow like years past

My question is fogging the engine and changing the oil. I can't for the life of me understand why we would change the engine oil then fog the cylinders Won't the fogging oil eventually make its way down into the oil pan

My thought this year was to simply change the lower unit oil and fog the cylinders then change the engine oil in the spring

Your idea sounds better to me, Alloy.

Or maybe take outboard off, hang up side down, in a heated building, preferably a closet in a bed room. Fog with peanut oil, sprinkle on some desecant and wait till spring.

Changing the engine oil gets rid of any acidic residue and water prior to storing the engine for 6 to 7 months. The fogging oil should not be an issue if you use the proper oil designed for the task.

What are you running for a motor Alloy?? 4S or 2S??? My 4S stays in the non-heated garage during the winter. Pull it out in the spring, squeeze the primmer bulb a few times, a little spitting & sputtering & fires up. No fogging for me.. I thought fogging was 2S thing???

I use Pennzoil 10W30 for my 4S......fogging for me is simply squirting a couple ounces in each cylinder then cranking the engine over with the kill switch disconnected......

I've been storing my "spare" 225 Honda the same way. But it does sit on a giant wooden stand, in my garage and all I've done is drop in some oil in the cylinders via the spark plug holes, and use a big breaker bar and a socket on top of the fly wheel and turn the engine, and then do so every few months.

I hope that's protecting it well enough.......and of course the oil is brand new and has never even been run yet.
But I was thinking "real" fogging oil (in a can under pressure) maybe alot better.

Jetty I always used Marvel Mystery Oil for my tractors, yard equipment, snowmobiles ect when they sat for a long period....

Never fogged any of my 4 stroke outboards, never had a problem.
My current Honda 90 is carbed, I treat the fuel, run it dry, change the oil, lower unit and crankacase, and finally drain the carbs.

The one in your signature has the F250 twins? and a 25 hp Kicker is the one that gets my warm and ready. The others with the Inboard Outboard hill have to many drawbacks with reliability issues with the lower unit for long runs. I just need to quit my Job and move to AK where the money grows on the Tundra and Ice. I was told that by a Poor Good Old Boy from Florida

The Merc dealer told me I am better off keeping the carbs as full of fuel as possible, for the same reason you would keep the fuel tank as full as possible. Matter of opinion I guess??? Is it a Mercury thing?????? What do all the other carb owners on here do????

i leave them full,my reason.i went with a buddy and bought 2 ice augers,one for him and one for me.i drained mine the first 3 years,he didnnt.at the beggining of the 4th season his auger ran great,mine not so great,found it was sucking air thru the gasket on the carb.took it apart to rebuild it and the gasket was all dried out and cracked.figured we better do his two.took it apart and the gasket looked like new.so now i allways leave the bowl full.just my opinion.on the winterizing thing i dont do it.if the boat sits for more than a month i warm the garage up put the motors down in a barrel fill em up with water and run them for 20 min.that way they are ready to go anytime.you never no when you will have some open water

I dropped some Mobile one in the cylinders, as a matter of fact.....had an old bottle in my garage cabnet.
I'll remember the MM oil though,

It sure seems to, by the look of all the people with 1/2 million dollar boats that only can use them 8 weeks out the year.

Why, I used to run my Yamaha F150s dry then drain the VST tanks.
