The first thing you have to do to weld these in is sand off the anodizing. Kind of defeats the purpose. So I would just go over to the rack of aluminum, pick out a piece of pipe, cut it on the chop saw and weld it to the boat with a doubler plate. You should be able to find a liner that will fit a standard size piece of tubing. Happy welding.

Yes it says that right in the welding books (anodized needs to be removed).

T-top and tower builders weld anodized with out removing it.
And some of those tops see some very rough abuse.

Would like to have welded in pipe type rod holders, but not all of are so lucky to have a welder, the knowledge, or the supply.

That's why you use (at least) rod holders with a gasket like rubber piece under them. The screws or bolts. I just added some teflon paste.

If only FLORIDA had more aluminum boats, maybe we'd have fabricators that understood them.

Bob I made 34 holders for the new boat. 1.5" 6063 pipe drilled for rods at the bottom. Flared the ends also. More to come

Nice job on the flared ends John. I'm kind of looking for some one to make a couple of hundred tubes like that. We have a customer that we make rocket launches for. We powdercoat the whole thing so its kind if a waste to buy the anodized ones.

How did you go about flaring the pipe? Are you going to press a roll pin in the bottom? Looking good!

Nate; a guy out here made me a die out of SS. Shaped 1.5" dia. for 1" then tapered up to 2" cone shape is 3/4".
I need to add the rods in the bottom and then weld them in
I got home and measured the cone shape. it is 3/4"
I also added pictures

Have you had any trouble with the pipe splitting? Do you use a shop press with the die. That is a great idea, looks like manufactured rod holders for a fraction on the cost. Now I just need to get my hands on a die, or a lathe to make one.

Keep up the good work.

No Nate I have not had any issues with splitting. I am using 6063 1.5" schedule 40.

The press is the 20 Ton Harbor Freight special. After you press it in you need to knock the Die out. Use a lube of some sort on the die to help in getting it out. I use my Aircraft Rivet Gun. Air hammer and a long rod to reach the die would work.

You mean Diameter right ?
1 1/2" Radius = 3" Dia. material .

AWESOME job on the flaring, sounds like you have an order for a couple hundred if you want it.
