Simple Question.....

#1

Post by JETTYWOLF »

Can a abrasive pad be used by hand to clean up and take off any "nastiness", IE: shine, flowers of corrosion(?), fuel stains in Nyalic and afterwards,
what will be the outcome?

Just a dull gray color and more stable surface?

Dave, let me restate your question.... can one tool be used to do lots of different jobs in lots of different conditions? Do you sense my frustration at trying to answer a 'loaded' question? Answer: Maybe it could ? Does that help?

If the metal is bare, Scothbrite(tm) or similar pads can abrade the bare metal and remove all sorts of different surface discolorations or scratches but if the surface is coated, then the coating may get removed in the process and will therefore color that area differently than the rest of the coated surface after the shine dulls.

Abrasive pads will treat bare metal different than they do coated metal. If the pad is not abrading through the coating, and only cleaning the surface of the coating, then it's different than if it removes the coating and effects the metal below.

coated and uncoated metal can't be dealt with in the same question since they're not the same surface material.

Cheers,

I should of said, I have a 7 year old Pacific. But most know that's my boat...sorry.

Pacific's are coated with Nyalic.

After 7 years of hard use. I see much of it is gone.

Either way, I like what I see as I did the transom platform, just by hand and Oh the Dirt and black that came off onto the pad. And with just water as a "lube" sure made it clean looking.

For giggles, Let's go with, ...... "Un-Coated"

I have a lot of time on my hands.
Not afraid of work, as I need something to do.
Zero money to spend.

A 5 pac of large scotch-brite pads are $5.00. I keep them around for other projects but as I looked at them, I W-O-N-D-E-R-E-D
So I splurged and got some for even, other projects I do.

Capt. Dave......when I had the rub rails welded on I did and then applied Nylic.....or what ever the stuff is called

Then as was applying it I says to myself "what the heck am I doin :?:  I got away from washing and waxing and now look at me I should be fishin

I slobbered the stuff on with a sponge and called it a day.....I'm content with the rough looking commercial look besides women like it rough :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm more interested in how to get it off. So I can "Sharkhide" the boat. (same as Nyalic coating) a Alloy protectant.

How did you get the obvious weld black off your hull, first?

See SIMPLE QUESTION ANSWERED post I made. It goes into the next phase.

Three different coarseness of Scotch brite pads Red Aggressive, Green mid grade, and white will polish it up. Clean Aluminum will turn the White scotch pad black quick. Acetone will clean the surface of chemicals and oils. Might strip off the Nyalic as well.
from the website
Easy Maintenance

Nyalic® coated surfaces can be damaged by a severe scratch or abrasion or by solvent spills that are left to dry over time without cleanup. The good news is that Nyalic® can be easily repaired in the field by the boat owner. Simply clean the surface and re-apply Nyalic® with our aerosol can. Nyalic® is self-leveling, which allows the repaired surface to blend seamlessly with the undamaged surfaces to provide a good-as-new appearance.

Aluminum Brite will clean the Metal well to rid you of some of the corrosion and discolarization. @http://www.nyalic.com/marine/

Sharkhide might work but pricy
