Post by Napa Mike »

Has anyone used rubber mats to pad a boat cockpit? any brand recommendations or installation tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Never used any, but I have seen some...only suggestion I have is make sure it can drain from underneath and maybe it should be a open grid pattern to allow thru drainage. But it is 'slippery decks' issue you are trying to solve, there are other methods that I consider much better and less hassel and weight.

Like this?

It is heavy in its thicker mats. Heavier mats are needed to keep it from moving around.

like non skid paint.

You fish? Or just "boat".

Or like some of the boats "down under" have carpet, can ya believe that?

Safe Boat & Armstrong (the two most recent alloy boats) I have been working on use non slip stick on stuff (large decals)

The big fireboat I just worked on had line-x like material.. but it was not looking very good and it only has been on for six months

I want something to cover and protect the cockpit, that is comfortable to walk, not slippery when bloody and easy to spray off. I like those dry-dek squares and I found this commercial kitchen matting out of Oregon--below.

If there is not too much water on the deck that works. If water gets underneath, it does tend to slide. Trick is to get it cut to the dimensions of the deck where it would be held in.

Dri-deck tends to be stiff and I have found it to slip more than softer materials. If you go to a food service supply showroom, they can show the different mats, thicknesses and options.

The 1/4" dri deck type stuff did not work in the cabin of the charter boat I was in. He had to go to 1/2" and that was in the cabin without a lot of water being put down. I would guess that you would need at least that for the rear deck. I looked at the Dri Dek website and saw that they only offer 9/16"

For years I used these on the deck of a crab boat. They are heavy so they don't move around and they're easy to clean because they come apart. Only down side is they only come in red.

I never leave the dock w/o my rubber floor!! I bought truck bed Mats and they're great!

Mats with holes would not work for me.
