Heaters

Post by ReelSong »

I know this has probably been hashed out before, but what is the best diesel/ kerosene heater to install in my pilot house? After a few cold overnighters 60 miles offshore last summer I've decided its time. Also thats one thing all potential buyes have asked for was a furnace/ heater installed so this winters projects for ReelSong are heater, auto pilot and fresh water tank. Back when I built this boat it was going to be a day trip 6 pack boat but that really narrows my potential sales area so I'm converting her to more family freindly camper.

I have an Espar Airtronic D4. It has operated flawlessly for the past six seasons. I hear good things about the Webastos as well, but there is no local support up here for them. I had a Wallas in the old boat and it was very finicky.

I fire my Espar, Wallas stove and Wallas oven up once a month over the winter. At -10º it will get into the mid 70ºs in the cabin.

I am currently installing my new Wallas heater in my boat. I had a couple of people PM me saying I am wrong for doing so. I bought it new this year at the Boat Show. It was a between the Espar D4 or this one. I still need to fab up a defrost tube for the windows and add the extra fan in the fresh air supply duct. Duckworth uses the Wallas heaters as OEM. My location for it has changed 5 times. Originally I wanted it on the SB side at the helm but something about my fuel lines required me to move it :burn:

What AP are you installing Terry?

I had a Webasto 2000 installed last year in my Hewes Ocean Pro. It works great, heats well and keeps the fog off the windows. I burn only kerosene rather than diesel, vey clean and no smell. When I bought I felt that Webasto and Espar were very comparable, but I felt better about the Webasto dealer ,Sure Marine, here in Seattle. -- It sure bets my old propane Buddy Heater , which works well, but due to the water in propane allowed the windows to fog. --But, if anyone wants it, make me an offer.

Webasto 2000 here. It has been working fine.

Done both wallas and webasto (several times). Webasto would be our vote. Better air flow, better heat. One easy number is to look at is the BTUs. If I remember correctly the Wallas 40D is about 13,000 btus and the comparable Webasto is 18,000 btus. You would probably be fine with the 3900 but 5500 would smoke you out faster especially if you are running a defrost manifold and have a bunch a heavy breathing buddies on board with wet rain gear.

Cheers.

Sculpin found a good deal on a "snugger" heater and even posted about the install.

I have had the diesel webasto 12000 btu model heater/defroster on my boat for 5+ years.I spend 300 hrs. (Eng. Hrs.) a year average on my boat in all weather and have used it a ton. It is one of the few pieces of equipment on the boat that has always worked and has needed zero maintenance. In my eyes it does not get any better than that. You watch now it will break tomorrow!

I have a coat and boots but hey I live in Texas.
I really like the way Petes heater works, we have ran it 5 days at a time [24-5]and it never skips a beat and I think the most we have burnt in 5 days is 5 gallons of kerosine.

Yes, the new owner purchased the webasto 12000 and we installed it before she shipped of to Juneau and as far as I know Its been flawless . I ran the boat for the lodge for two weeks and ran it the whole time. Worked great.

thanks Reelsong. My family is buying a boat and the builder offered us a wallas. but, based on site feed back, we are going to request a webasto.
Cheers,
Mike
