Bow Eyes

#1

Post by Challenge »

Hi All,

So my bow eye went POP when I was hauling my Viking in for the season. It wasn't a surprise, one of my sons had noticed a crack in it over the summer. We keep our boats on moorings so the stainless mooring hook is always working against the aluminum.

What do you guys use for bow eyes? I plan on getting a new one welded on this winter and wondered what was best. I was initially thinking about a 1/2" piece of aluminum plate with a couple of holes drilled in it.

Thanks in advance

I like a shackle for moorings. Find a heavy wall alloy tube that has an I.D. that fits snug on a shackle pin, cut the tube so its a snug fit between the ears on the shackle, weld the tube into a hole in your new plate, weld plate to stem, install shackle. Won't wear out because the shackle doesn't wobble in the tube

Bob that Looks real familiar.

I need to remember where I saw the 1/2" Eye at. Premade ready to install. I think it was at Fraser Bronze Foundry. it is not listed but I think that they make one ready to weld on.

See if you can do the double bow eye.
That way when towing you have a spot for the wench line and a tie down.

Something like these Metalshark boats>>>>> http://www.metalsharkboats.com/33-relentless/

I spoke with Anne Fraser and she is great... they take credit cards and use usps for shipping small orders sounds like a nice business to work with.

The bow eyes that they have are completely cast so I guess I will use a shackle. Can I use a galvanized shackles or do I need stainless??? Also the holes are pretty big so I will have wobble of the shackle... any Ideas?

Thanks for the help & recommendation.

Cheers

Before you weld it on drill out one of the holes as necessary to install an alloy bushing with the required width and I.D. hole size. Then have whoever is going to install the bow eye plate also weld the bushing in place. IMO it would be cheaper and easier to just fabricate the whole thing than to start out with a casting that you have to modify anyway.

Bob that is true but you need a chunk of .750" plate plus a band saw to fabricate one. Buy it in a casting ready to go on and be welded it will save you time that equals money.

Rick I did post on Bobs new thread the info on the bow eye. Fraser has them in stock. If you want to make one the info is on a PDF file that I posted.
