I have a AR part that needs repair.

It's 7075 T6 is it weldable?
If so what should I weld it with?

This stuff is highly crack sensitive due to the alloy composition, so it's considered 'unweldable' by many engineers.

It can be welded, TIG and 5356 is the only real choice but the prep, post weld cooling and things like that are important. (you know the bury in the back of lime routine?) I'd pass on welding if the piece is T6 which is very likely the case, because you're not going to get it back to that heat treatment/temper level unless you've got an oven and know the program needed to step up, soak time, and step down.

I've welded what I was told was 70series aluminum a few times and things were good enough to get the piece out the door, but I needed cash and told them if broke it wasn't supposed to be welded.

That's the extent of my experience and little bit of knowledge.

G & R, aren't we going to have a follow up? What did you decide? did you weld it? did it work? How is the Forum to learn " OUR" mistakes if those making the mistakes (on all our behalf's) don't share the knowledge with the rest of us 'learners'? If you don't even say if you took the work, we don't learn? If you don't show the results (if you DID take the job) we don't learn? Leaving the welders among us to wonder- what did G&R Fad do?

I went with your recommendation.
It's a $67 part for him, by the time it's welded and heat treated it's not worth the trouble.
I get to hang this one on the wall.
