Isolators and grounds-what is code?

#1

Post by Bullshipper »

What type of isolation materias and be used to isolate SS rod holders and SS fasteners from aluminum hulls?

Is the negative post on the battery the main gound for the entire DC circuitry on an aluminum boat?

How do you isolate the hull against AC wiring circuits? What is the ground, the hull?

Are portable generators like Hondas self grounded and safe on boats?

How about automotive battery chargers, AC/heaters window units and chest freezers commonly used in houses?

Who writes the bible on this?

Bullshipper,

Can't answer all but Tef-Gel on SS fasteners. I use shrink tube as a barrier for clamp on stuff. It wraps nicely around things. I've also used the Tef-Gel on the bottom surface of flush rod holders.

To isolate electrical items, I've uses Garolite G10 or G11 which is an electrical insulator material. They do make this material as a film. Very expensive, but can be machined, drilled, tapped.........

Assuming the neg post, to the motor to the water is the ground........

Good ???? though......

I am looking for a how to manual, applied to aluminum boats in general.

I know what general systems are required, but am looking for the code that specs the materials for the main electrical systems, and backups.

Since the coast gaurd is buying aluminum boats, I would think that they might have some standards, but what I have seen so far is very general.

I was hoping to buy and skim this book prior to committing on the purchase of a used 26 ft pacific skiff with evinrude ficht. I remain suspicious of potential electrical problems with owing an aluminum boat kept in the water year round, next to other boats and houses. I procrastinated around the holidays and lost the opportunity to buy the boat but saved the link for the book.

I hope this can help some of you
