When my Almar was built, it had a heavy rubber rub rail along the side about 16" from the gunnel. The previous owner took the rail off, filled the holes with epoxy (on an aluminum boat ) and painted it. Now I have some minor corrosion forming under the paint in these areas. I have new rub rails to put on, and will sand down and fix all the corrosion spots before I attach the new rails. But my question is - should they go on to bare aluminum or should I paint underneath first? It will be rubber directly on the aluminum or paint.
I am half tempted to get all the paint blasted off and just be done with it for good!
paint or not?

If you want it; the paint blasted off see Chaps over in Bremerton. He does good work and is a reasonable person.
He has the equipment and know how to do it right the first time

Yeah, I have been in contact with Chaps about doing the bottom and we talked about the sides. Just trying to get some time when I don't need the boat and when it can work into his schedule!
Get that prop issue worked out yet?

Re: paint or not?
I'd lean toward.....no alloy boat needs paint. It's a maintenance issue as you discribed, and is totally cosmetic.

Re: paint or not?
No paint. But if the new rubrail is going to totally seal the alloy I would allow it a week or so in the air so it can oxidise before fitting the rail.

Re: paint or not?
I agree. Paint has no value other than looks. I've heard when aluminum oxidizes that it's a chemical occurrence and actually preserves the aluminum (if u can get past the looks).

Re: paint or not?
When it comes down to it, its a personal preference. I like painted hulls, and if correctly done it will add protection.
