Anchor chain

#1

Post by Bob5292 »

I manage to lose at least one anchor a year and recently spent an evening reading up on anchors, chain, and rode. It looks like I am better off using a higher grade of chain than the cheapo proof coil that I was running in the past. I realize it is slightly less wear resistant and slightly less corrosion resistant but I don't see that being a problem for my uses. When going from proof coil to grade 43, I can get a much longer length of chain for the same price and the same weight since you are going down in size to achieve the same working load limit. The only downside I can see is that shackle selection is a little harder since you working with a smaller link size. I went over to Fisheries Supply and they carry two brands of grade 43 chain. The ACCO brand was exactly twice as expensive for the same strength as the chain from CMP global unlimited. I don't know anything about chain and assume there is someone on the board that can steer me in the right direction.

Get a hold of Lance Eggers at Washington Chain, he's a member here. He's in the engineering & sales dept. over there and can answer any chain question and will likely give you a good quote on what you want. 206-623-8500.

I have seen a lot of problems with Chinese steel and would avoid Chinese chain or wire due to quality control problems on the steel it is made from & fake certificates. Spend more for chain made in the USA and sleep better when anchored.

Bob, do you use a windlass of any type? I ask because you may need to fit the chain to the gypsy on the windlass. Capt PJ
