Stabi taking a hit!

#1

Post by DwayneJ »

I just heard about this third hand and feedback I received was the owner is ok. What I heard is the vessel was hit by a 42’ fishing boat. Vessel assist towed the boat back to Long Beach where they pulled it out of the water. Looking forward to hearing from the owner... Physically appears only 1-2 chambers + sealed deck compromised but boat is a write off.

I sure am glad that all are safe and no injuries. So how did it happen? I will be really interested to hear about the circumstances. Since the vessel was hit in the starboard quarter this vessel is the burdened vessel. Now if the vessel was drifting it still is the burden vessel as it is still underway but not moving. So if it was bad visibility then the moving vessels were not diligent and maintaining a safe speed for conditions. If the Stabil-craft was moving, then it didn't get out of the way in time...BUT the whole thing about the RofR, is that ALL vessels are to do everything in their power to avoid collision.

I am just trying to come up with situations that would result in a hit at the starboard quarter! I do hope we can get the accident reports. In taking my classes for the USCG Licenses I have the BRM endorsement (Bridge Resource Management) and in the case studies we had to read and discuss most were the fault of the operators, notice it is pural, due mostly to their arrogance. Sure hope that isn't the case here! But it does make you think again and again!

I say that as all summer I have had to deal with rented canoes, paddle boards, electric boats and drunks who think that a 105' vessel can't hurt them and they have the right of way! It is my license even if they are in the wrong!

Sure glad everyone was OK! BTW, what did the other boat look like? Capt. PJ

Holy $#!t!!!!! That is my neighbors boat! He used to be on this site often!
I saw him today walking up his driveway and was going to stop and ask if he had been fishing, but I didn't. I will walk over tomorrow and talk to him.
Thank GOD for the construction of that boat!!!!!! This would probably be a much different conversation had he owned a lesser craft.

I just went to take a look at the boat. MAJOR damage from a direct starboard side hit from a much larger boat. There was separation at the welds of one side chamber...BUT the deck is still square and the hull of the boat was not compromised or even dented. the aft samson posts were both bent, the port gunwale was dented from the impact and weight of the other craft (this is exactly opposite the initial impact) and the non alloy top was damaged ...so the the stabi was carrying this other boat on it's back! The title of this should be:

Tough as nails StabiCraft SAVES MANS LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe after everything legal wise has settled down the owner can post some details of what happened and how it happened.
THANK GOD he is OK and walking. I can't imagine getting nailed like that broadside, no injuries and the boat sill floating.

Stabicraft has built a great product and this is the proof.

This is why we love our ALLOY BOATS.

I would have to agree with your last statement Welder. Gotta love metal boats. Bend em, twist em, smash em, crumple em all up & they STILL FLOAT. It's great the owner is ok. Never seen a glass boat hold up that well. Looks like standard safety equipment needs to be upgraded. 1. Pfd. 2. hull flotation. 3. Helmet.

Thanks for the kind words on the boat everyone. It really should go to CalStabi. He can always replace the boat. I know boats become part of the family, but unlike family, you can choose to re-build, modify and replace them. People are irreplaceable.

I just hope he 'gets back on the horse'. The ocean is our world.

We are a proud bunch and even though this is not the way we like to hear feedback, I will pass it around.

Vessel Assit? Are they a private company? We don't have many groups like that here. If you have trouble, you are normally on your own for quite some time.

Thanks again and more good luck to CalStabi,

Tim.

Tim, Vessel Assist is the same as TowBoatUS, it's a on the water tow company. For about $150.00 a year [ Membership fee ] you can have on the water towing , Gas, Jump starts, parts and what not and all you have to do is sign your name when services are performed . I also have the roadside assist with them , they will tow your boat and truck or what ever is needed.
Just Google them to see what they offer.

Chris, your boat will come with flotation and life jackets but the helmet is on you brother.

I haven't seen him lately, but I will get the details when I do. The boat has been removed from the marina so I can't get any more pictures. It certainly looked fixable to me as the hull seemed to be in fine shape. I will post the scoop when I see him.

About your StabiCraft, care to share some of your ownership experience with a noob?

Regarding the OP, my Math is a little rusty but a 42 footer would pack quite a wallop and I would sure like to see the deconstruction of this accident with all pertinent figures included. For the Stabi to suffer what would appear to be by all measure a death blow yet for the larger vessel to simply ride ontop of it without sinking it is just amazing.
I only do what the voices in the Tackle Box tell me to.

I've done some dumb things. Newbe mistakes. Too embarrassing to put in print. Be assured the Stabi took them much better than my pride. Just like the Pacific boats and other better alloys the Stabicraft are built more like little ships than recreational boats. I like the positive buoyancy design, but it cost you some interior space. If you looking put them on your short list.
