Unpainted alloys...black hands?

#1

Post by Fisherman »

A salesman today told me that I should paint or zolatone the inside of my new boat. (I had told him I wanted NO paint on it). He said you will get black hands from touching unpainted aluminum.

What?????

All you guys with no paint, tell me the truth please!

The mill finish on new Aluminum will give you Black hands. The oils that are used in the manufacturing will also dry the hell out of them as well. After the boat is washed a few times You will not have that problem. Use Sharks Hide to keep it bright or be a true Alloy boat Fiend and let it go gray.

I know...funny stuff. I've been hearing a lot of it lately. Some alloy salesmen know less than I do about their boats. I think the main reason many builders want to paint the inside of the boat is so they can grind, sand, and scrape as much as they need and then they can cover it over with paint. I've heard all about the brightness and glare of unpainted alloy as an excuse to paint. Another builder frankly admitted that by the time they are done, the aluminum is simply too scratched to leave bare.

I dont know, I painted both my builds cause I thought it looked good. And my diamond plate floors in my last willie were still turning my extra tuffs black after 8 years. I like them either way . Oh and I didnt need to grind or hide anything. Definitley one less thing to worry about without paint.

Another reason some manufacturers insist on painting their boats is to hide the Bondo or other plastic filler they use to hide crappy welds. I have personally seen this on several Kingfisher boats.

That boy needs to go sell used cars. I may get a little dirty out on the boat, but it sure isn't from the aluminum.

Tell them to prep it for paint, but don't paint it! Shouldn't that remove all the process oils etc? Is the salesman living in the dark ages, black death, black plague? Capt PJ

I guess I should not paint the next one to fit in here, but I still think she looks good this way, and there's no bondo or fillers, to each there own

Terry, your boat looks fantastic with the deep forest green. It really sets it off. Well done.

I climb up and down aluminum ladders all summer for my summer business and my hands are always "black". I always thought it was the oxidation from the aluminum.
Spending my kids inheritance with them, one adventure at a time.

Terry, your boat is Awesome and a good color choice in my book.
I think the type of Alloy makes a difference also. I do know from working Aluminum and Copper you will get the presidential look when running a buffing wheel or hand polishing .

The Nyalic on my boat is about gone and she is turning to that dark gray patina and I don't get anything/color off of her on my clothes or hands.

Yah, I will agree, the "mill finish" on all metal with give you black hands, ruins your cloths too. I think you get charged for the amount of oil they put on for protection while in transit. I don't use my aluminum ladders enough to notice.

It also says alot about the company the guy is selling for. My big LITTLE GIRL about the boats at dealers and at the shows is that they do not clean them. Open up the hatches and look in and you will find shavings and other debris. I bet the Above salesman has gotten dirty Black Hands crawling around the his (new) boats. Soap and water as well as a Vacuum might sell a few more boats.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh, is that what we're talkin' here :?: :?:

Boats that have not been correctly cleaned prior to heading out the factory doors?

If so, I can't say yea or nay. Because you can eat wet scrambled eggs off my deck before each customer of mine steps aboard, without worry to go "get bloody". But that 1st impression is always, "Wow, ya got one fine azz machine here Dave", and that's what I wanna hear!

Maybe the "original" poster should check with a company without a floor plan and dealership with boats in a lot (?) selling whatever to whomever.

There is many fine builders represented here on AAB, and customer builders. Big small and the other.

Original Poster here.

That was actually told to me by a custom boat builder....the owner no less. I do not want ANY paint on my boat, patina it will be. What steps must they do to prepare/wash/clean it for use?

I'd assume....

a shop vac, some simple green, a boat brush, and water, and a intern known as Manual La'bor.
