New builder on Vancouver Island
Here's a new one to add to the master builders list Chaps.
http://www.aegirboats.com/
This guy just started up last year and has build two of the Bruce Cope designed 26 walkarounds. He has a very experienced welder working with him. He used to work at Daigle welding and Wolf boats. This is the particular design that I am interested in.
I went down to the Victoria boat show this weekend to check out hull number two that they had on display there. I talked with John Linton the builder for over an hour and a half and he is a great guy. We went over almost every square inch of her. Opened up hatches, crawled around in her belly, etc.
It was very cool to see up close and personal. It did not look that intimidating on a trailer either (for towing). I would like to stretch her out by 3 or 4 feet to gain some more deck space. I think a person could widen the cabin slightly as well as there is a ton of room to walk around it. The head compartment in the front of the cabin could be stretched out towards the bow to give one more room doing their duty.
Anyways I thought I would post up a link to John's website for all to see. He is a great guy who told me if I do start to build one he would be available to answer any questions and he even offered to lend me his jig's!
Cheers,
Sculpin

Very nice Love to see that reverse chine knock down the spray and add bow lift
Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
Great looking rig, Interesting framing, are those formed box beams? I like how the bottom plates join at the keel with that vertical spine.
I'll add this builder to the master list

Here are some pic's I took while down there checking her out.
Just look at the difference in the hull design compared to that Thunderjet TJ offshore. This is a real offshore hull.
Side shot.
Rear shot.

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
I thought I would point out that John indicated to me that they are only building blanks right now. In other words the owner of these two (a fishing charter company) did all the rigging and interior seating etc.that you can see in some of the photos on his site. Basically he is welding up the hull and cabin then letting folks finish them and rig them how they want. This could change in the future as he grows.

Those chines are huge! I like the lines on that hull. When will you be towing her home.

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
Yeah they are 12" chines!!! The lines are really nice me thinks as well. I hope to build one myself in the next couple of years. I looked at some of the Specmar's of similar design for a few years now but when Bruce came out with this one it jumped out at me. The only down side I see is she is quite deep. I know a lot of folks like that but John the builder said you can barely touch the water when you lean over the side. It would take me some getting used to with the low sides of my current ride that I am used to.spoiled one wrote:Those chines are huge! I like the lines on that hull. When will you be towing her home.
I really like the shot of her next to the TJ. Major difference in design. The bow is quite full and the high sides just reek of going offshore tuna fishing with her. I forget what the entry degree was on the bow but it is quite sharp. It is 20 degrees deadrise at the stern.
The owner emailed me and gave me some specifics with the twin 115 set up he has on the first one. He is not worried about speed so he gets a nice cruising speed of 24 knots with a top out at 30 loaded. The only reason he went with 115's is the rest of his fleet runs them so he has spares on hand and lot's of parts etc. He did say that he felt twin 150's would be perfect for the length it is now. I want to add a few feet to her and put something bigger on the back. Bruce indicated this would be no problem with the added length.

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
I have a 37" sleeve length and can barely touch the water. No big thang, really. I love all the freeboard. I really like the looks of that hull. A walk around wouldn't work for us Alaskans. We need a BAF (big assed fort).

That boat is a tuna fisherman's dream!!! What is the beam?? Very nice lines.......
Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
Is it me or the angle but the TJ looks like a toy next to the Cope.
It's nice that there is someone building these types of boats. I liked the 23' Winter Harbor but there have only been 2 built. Not
very easy to get out on a test ride. Specmar wasn't any better as I like Pollards design even more. However, there isn't one in the lower 48 to test ride from what I've been able to gather. Buying a boat on just word of mouth doesn't seem like the smartest thing so I dropped both. Although I must admit I did get a lot of info from one of the guys with a 23' WH. In the end the cabin was a tad small.

That's what I have been thinking. It is 10'6" beam. I love the lines as well.AlloyToy wrote:That boat is a tuna fisherman's dream!!! What is the beam?? Very nice lines.......

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
The beauty of these two is I can probably go for a test drive in one of them and see how they ride and perform. They are close to where I live. Worst case scenario I will have to go on a charter out of Winter Harbour and catch lot's of fish while seeing how the boat handles. Actually that might not be worst case scenario as I can see how she fishes too .jj225 wrote:Is it me or the angle but the TJ looks like a toy next to the Cope.

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
Sure looks like it without acid washing don't it. I don't like the foam either. I want to talk to Bruce to see about sealing off some bulkheads or otherwise to create 3 chambers in the under belly. I don't like the scuppers either and want to do something different. I think in the pictures I posted the builder actually lowered the swim platform due to the owner running his 115's. I am going to email him and ask him that. It's kind of bugging me.Chaps wrote:Hey, like . . . is that thing made out of stainless steel?

Re: New builder on Vancouver Island
Yeah, round scuppers that sit high above the deck like those in that boat don't work real well unless major flooding is all one is worried about. A slot that's even with the deck evacuates water better and keeps things dryer.
