Historic Wooldridge Pictures

#1

Post by glen wooldridge »

In celebration of our 100 year anniversary, we will be going through our archives and posting old pictures.
If you have any old Wooldridge pictures (Pre 1990's), we would love to see them. Glen

Here’s a picture we found in my grandpa’s archives. I believe it’s from the 20’s or 30’s, on the Rogue. The photo caption was…”Woman angler landing a big chinook is Mrs. Darling from Los Angeles.”
Image

Glen (right) and Mr. Degner at Blossom Bar during an early day drift trip down the Rogue. This was before Glen blasted the channel downriver. Probably in the 1930's.
Image

Here’s an example of glen blasting boulders. This is at Clay Hill on the Rogue.
Image

Amaziah Aubery and his crew at the Almeda Mine bridge over the Rogue. Mining equipment had to be unloaded, the boat lifted across then reloaded for the downriver trip.

Early tow rig, two horsepower!

Here's an ad my Grandfather had for guided trips on the Rogue, along with a few more pics. Glen
Image

This is Glen Sr. performing a test run down the Rogue River before they used Boat No. 2 up the Salmon River back in 1948.
Image

This another picture of the same boat in 1948. Check out the Evinrude motor.
Image

Here’s an early picture of Glen Sr. on the tiller. I don’t know what they were hunting for, but with the shotgun in the clients lap, it seemed appropriate with duck season winding down.

This pic shows Glen Sr. with TV Star Truman Bradley, who was shooting a show on the Rogue River. His career spans from the 1930’s to the 50’s as a radio broadcaster, actor and narrator in numerous movies. He was also host of “Science Fiction Theatre” and was in a couple Charlie Chan movies. Glen
P.S. Notice the "Jack-BACK SIDE" lift, which my Grandfather invented in the 40's for raising a prop motor to run in shallow water.

I think these old pics are great. I bet they conjur up some great memories for your family. I especially love the old pamphlets for advertising. The last line of the paragraph above the cargo boat that begins with "Freight to remote lodges" is really comical.
THX for posting these historical images. BTW, I don't think you could do blasting any more...hummm!!!

This picture is on the Rogue River in 1975.
We took two boats and spent a week with my Grandfather on the Rogue. One boat was a 21’ with a 302 Ford and three stage Hamilton. The other was a 18’ center console with a 181 Chev and a two stage Hamilton. Glen

Hi Glen

Thanks for sharing the great photos, they brought back some great memories of my trip up the Rouge in the late 80's with Jerry's Rouge Jets. Do you guys build their boats? I noticed that they mention your family on their site.

Please keep them coming!

Cheers

Rick

Here’s a couple pics taken in the 80’s of a old boat my grandfather built. I believe my grandfather used this boat on the Salmon in the late 40’s.

This is another one of Grandpa’s wooden boats. When this pic was taken, I wasn't born, but I remember riding in the old Suburban as a grade school kid.
The year of the truck is somewhere between 1948 and 53. The pic was probably taken in the 50’s. Glen

This is my cousin Mark Wooldridge in, I think, about 76 or 77. The boat is 16' with a 4' bottom. The motor is an in-line 6 cyl, 150 Merc. He ran Hell's Gate on the Fraser and up the Thompson with this boat. Glen

Here are some early sled's at my grandfathers shop in Grants Pass, OR. The man in the picture is Ray Arman, who worked for my Grandfather for many years. His wife Florence Arman put the book "The Rogue A River To Run" together about my Grandfather. Glen

This picture is down on the Rogue River at my Grandfathers cabin.
I remember this bear "Yogi" from one of my trips with my Grandfather. They would feed him pancakes. The guy feeding Yogi was my Grandfather's good friend Glenn Ballou. Glen

Here's a video of my Grandfather. He's the first to run up Hell's Gate in 1975. He was 79 at the time. The story is in the book The Rogue, "A River to Run" Chapter 23. Glen

This is a drift boat going through Mule Creek Canyon with the front guy using a Pike Pole to keep the boat off the canyon walls.
In the book, The Rogue-A River To Run, the back index references 11 pages on Mule Creek Canyon. Glen

This is the end of a float trip down the Rogue. They had to power down to Gold Beach for the last few miles. Notice the inner tube (on the lower right) used to help tow as a shock absorber, so not to jerk so hard. Glen

Correction on yesterday’s caption – Yesterday’s picture was taken in 1951 by Mercury Marine. The man in the boat with Glen was Bob Pritchett, who worked for Glen for years and ultimately bought Glen’s guide service.
Mercury used pictures taken for advertisements and made a movie of this upriver Rogue trip. They flew Glen and Sadie to New York, to premiere the movie and go to the New York Boat Show. You can read about this in chapter 19 of The Rogue, A River To Run. Glen

In light of the Academy Awards, here’s a couple pics of Ginger Rogers with my Grandfather.
She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1940 for her performance in Kitty Foyle and made 73 films during her long career.
You can read about her and the trips she made with my grandfather down the Rogue, starting on pg.138 of the Book, The Rogue A River to Run. “I think one of the best guests we ever had on a trip was Ginger Rogers……..” Glen
