In honor of President's Day last week (Monday February 16th.), here's a couple fishing pics of President Herbert Hoover.
My Grandpa took him out several times on the Rogue. Here's an excerpt from the book The Rouge A River to Run. "President Hoover was a quiet man. He didn't talk much except maybe to ask a question about fishing. He was a good fisherman. I took him fishing several times on the upper Rogue, then he made one trip with me down river to Gold Beach..." He was the 31st. President and was in office from 1929-1933. Glen

Left to right: Bob Pritchett, Glen Senior, Charlie Foster.
They are at the finish of their trip up the Rogue in 1947. This was the first upriver trip.
Charlie Foster worked for Grandpa for years and Charlie’s daughter married Bruce Wooldridge, Bob Wooldridge’s brother. Bob Pritchett worked for Grandpa for years and eventually bought the guide business from Glen Sr. Glen

This pic is with Jackie Cooper (On the left), when he went down the Rogue river with Grandpa.
Jackie (1922-2011) was a child actor (One of “Our Gang’s" main character’s) who managed to make the transition to an adult acting career, working in television and as a director and producer. He’s mentioned in the book The Rogue, A River to Run, on page 97 & 138.
In this photo, they are salting fish to take home. Notice, they also have a deer hanging in the background. Glen

The much anticipated spring Chinook are starting to arrive at the Columbia River and its tributaries. Many anglers will anchor up in an old fashioned hog line, just like in this pic from Glen Senior’s archives. W/B

This is a pic of my grandfather after he retired. To keep busy, he built some wood drift boats in his home shop.
Your looking at more than just a boat; you’re looking at a wood jig also. Glen

Hells Gate on the Fraser.
This is the first trip up the Fraser. Grandpa ran it 8 times on this day.
Here’s a quote from him on page 246 of the book, The Rogue A River To Run.
“After eight trips through, we ran out of passengers. I was kind of glad. When we left the gorge, we went about 25 miles up the Fraser to the mouth of the Thompson, where it comes out of the Black Canyon. You can look down the canyon, oh, 300 feet or more. It looks kind of spooky. Next morning we took off up that river. It was a beautiful ride. We never stopped until we got to Spence Bridge. I really believe the Thompson was the hardest to run.” Glen

In 1964, Grandpa’s boat design & patterns were featured in Popular Mechanics Magazine.
He developed the wide bow for running white water. A wide bow lifts better and takes less power to go over a roller compared to a pointed bow boat pushing through a roller. In big white water situations, it doesn’t get pushed around as much. Here’s an example of Grandpa running one of his wood outboard jet boats. Glen

The Spring Chinook Salmon season is starting to heat up.
I don't know when this pic was taken, but the truck my Grandfather is standing in front of, is a 36 Ford I believe.
I can tell by the wheel and hub caps (Shown in a different pic). Glen

Rainie Falls on the Rogue.
This is a chute for drift boats that my Grandpa dynamited out of bedrock to line drift boats down river. Glen

Asking Glen…What was it like for your Grandfather going down the Rogue for the first time and encountering Rainie Falls?...and he said…”Anytime he heard a lot of water noise, he pulled over and walked down to see what he had to deal with.”

My cousins Mike and Mark and their Dad Bruce, who is my uncle, built boats for years in Grants Pass after my Grandfather retired from boat building. Glen

This pic was taken during the filming of my Grandfather running up the Rogue.
The guy to the left is Bob Pritchett, who stars in the movie with Grandpa. The boat behind Bob (with the life preserver hanging on the console) was used in the movie.
Behind my grandfather (on the right) is the back-up boat. The movie was filmed by Mercury and the pics were taken by Mercury. Glen

The wording at the bottom says…
Wooldridge Equipment has been repeat ordered many times by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Shell Oil, U.S. Army, Morrison Knudsen in Snake River Hells Canyon, State Game and Fish Commissions like Wyoming, Oregon, Saskatschewan, Idaho, etc. and guides, fishermen, expeditions, boatmen from Venezuela to Yukon to Florida. “IT’S GUARANTEED.” Proof-tested and used for years under toughest conditions.
