1933 - Glen Sr.’s neighbor took a float trip with him. The neighbors Packard was shuttled to Gold beach to tow the boat back to Grants Pass after floating the river. He fell asleep and wrecked the car. Grandpas knee cap was broken in the accident. He had a cast that went down to his ankle from his hip. Later, Glen Sr. had a friend cut off his cast early, so he could do another trip.

In 1963 a new invention revolutionized boating in skinny and whitewater areas. This is what enabled grandpa to evolve his boat into the Wooldridge Jet boat that we know today.

“This invention was peter Stallman’s Outboard Jet Unit, a snail-shaped housing replacing the lower unit of propeller housing on the outboard motor. Its intake siphons in water and swirls it around the spiral housing, then shoots it out in a thousand-gallon-per minute stream.”(Text from: The Rogue: A river to run)

The outboard jet was born, and it allowed boats to run in water that previously wasn’t possible.

Here are a few pictures taken of the oldest outboard jet in existence. It is a 25hp Johnson and was one of the first motors used to run the Rogue in 1961.

peter Stallman was the Inventor of the outboard jet. He was 34 at the time, and was from San Carlos California. He believed that testing his new invention on the Rogue river would be the toughest test possible. He had to find somebody to build a boat for him to do the tests.

Quote: Glen Wooldridge Sr. “peter got in touch with me through Larry Lucas, who ran the Lucas Lodge at Agness. Larry told him he should see me for ideas about the testing, then Larry called me and told me, ‘Theres a fellow here who has something I think you ought to have a look at.’ So that was the beginning of my being involved."

This is one of the boats he built. More to follow tomorrow!

“Stallman and his father manufactured bearings. peter was a machinist, and he thought up the idea of the jet unit. He got some books from England, where they had done some research, and studied up on the idea. He Started tinkering with it, and he is a pretty shrewd fellow. He was wise enough to put these Ideas together and get it to work.
He told me he wanted to give it a test, to run it from Gold Beach to Grants Pass, so I furnished the boats for the run. I had a 35-horse Evinrude and he had two Johnson Motors. He made a jet for my motor and had his Johnsons mounted with jets. We went over to Gold Beach and made the run upriver.” Quote: Glen Wooldridge Sr.

The run was made in the two boats Glen Built. Glens was a 16’ with the 35hp Evinrude outboard jet, and Dicks was an 18’ with the twin Johnsons. When the run was made, peter brought along both his father and Bert Goldrath, a writer and photographer who documented the trip.

It took four days for the two boats to travel 120 miles. They broke the trip into four 30-mile runs and averaged a travel speed of 22 miles per hour.

The information is from Chapter Twenty one of The Rogue: A River to Run. There is more information on this trip in the book.

{QUOTE: The Rogue: A river to Run}
“Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrated, Popular Boating, and Boating all ran the story of the trip in 1963 issues.
“We were grossly underpowered on that trip. We had quite a tussle to get up the river. The jet wasn’t perfected, and the motor wasn’t suitable for the job. After I ran the jet a while, I decided the Mercury was the answer, because it has high rpm and will wind that thing up.””

“The advent of the jet unit gave whitewater runner much more leeway in running rivers. Glen had fun playing with the jet unit and adapting his river boat to use it. It enabled him to run in water that even his Jackass motor lift had denied him before.”

The information is from Chapter Twenty one of The Rogue: A River to Run. There is more information on this trip in the book including more pictures and other interesting jet boat history.

Lost Super 8 Film from the Late 70’s Found!

In the late 70’s my Dad, my sister and myself were invited to make a trip into Hells Canyon by a customer (Chuck) from Boise. We met at Pittsburgh Landing. We shot some super 8 of this trip. At some point, I lost this footage and looked everywhere with no luck. Recently, Chuck invited my family to spend a week with his family in McCall. Our kids and grandkids are about the same age, we had a fun time recreating, reminiscing and watching our grandkids play together. Us guys took a day trip into Hells Canyon using his Son in Laws 1986 25’ Classic Inboard. Lots of fun, we ran up to Granite Creek and caught and released lots of Bass. The big surprise of the trip was when Chuck pulled out an Old Super 8 reel and a note that he had recently found. I had sent it to him on Jan 30 1980 it had the footage from that late 1970’s trip. There was also footage from the Rogue and a couple of custom boats on Lake Washington in Seattle.
Thank You Chuck!

Image

I will post that 1970’s footage here in the near future.
